I'm not really sure why it makes much of a difference. You should be able to put a different cylinder on it. As long as the stroke is the same, all the timing should work. You might have to mill down either the cases or the part of the cylinder where the base gasket sits to make everything line up. You would probably want to go with a reed valve kit if you're worried about the skirt hitting the crank lobes.
I'll bet it wouldn't be too hard to modify a cylinder if you know someone with a lathe or a mill.
