from what i understand the hpi only puts out 10 watts which isnt much

the first thing to do is run the bike & find out how much voltage it puts out , if its more than 14v you need a voltage regulator , treats has some generic ones, but the thing is, if the lights your using more than 10w the battery will be drained faster than it can recharge, & it wont be long before the battery dies
