the gap gives the spark somewhere controlled to happen.

without a spark, there's no ignition. without a controlled spark, the ignition would be quite erratic.

the gap can be set wider or smaller with a spark gapping tool if you want it to be accurate, or with a screwdriver if you're ok with approximate.
