I know there are some professional welders on this site. Where are you? I have a water-cooled tig set-up and have welded aluminum stock but not cast aluminum. I know that cast is more susceptible to cracking because of the air pockets and imperfections. I plan to preheat and for good measure maybe I'll let it cool slowly in the oven. Someone must know the AWS code for this or at least has had favorable results from their experiences. Please?
