My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Just got my hands on a sweet 80's honda pa50II (thanks Taylor for the sweet deal and Tim for pointing me in the right direction!)

I ordered a new plate/rollers from treats, plan on moving that headlight down and getting lower handle bars. I've only had puch's before so this Honda is going to be something really new for me. I hope to get a new pipe and carb when treats gets an order of the del carb kits back instock.

Any tips for someone starting off?

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

You're supposed to put pics up after you're done dude! haha jk!

Hobbits are intimidating at first if you're not familiar but you'll get very familiar with them as they require quite a bit of attention until you get it dialed. You also will get more help in the repair forum.

At least your wiring is in tact.

carb, vario, rear pulley, points, is a good start. I just tear a bike down piece by piece the first time, it eliminates so much hassle and guessing.

Don't waste your time, start in the wiki, and order a clutch/pulley puller from treats.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

just curious if treats sells the ramp and weights for the stock vario now?

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

marco you jerk!

thats a nice bike dude, your prob gonna sell your puchs off now to buy parts for it.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

i hate you. i want a stock black hobbit so bad. i've only seen one for sale, and it was like 500 miles away.

i'd pay big bucks for a super clean, unmolested, stock black hobbit!

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Marco Marco /

Thanks for the advice! Just put in an order for a puller from treats!

SABAT! I still have your ipod!!! yeah parts are a little pricey for this baby so I might try to keep it stock and hopefully at 30mph until i get money. But sell my puchs? noooooo way! they are my babies.

I can't wait to start cleaning the dirt and rust of it. I wont clean my room but I'll totally clean my mopeds!

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Damn, I have been looking for a black hobbit for a grip now.

Thats a CDI battery year.

Make sure your battery is good or your bulbs might blow.

Go to bike bandit and order the roller weights and caps, the ones in your variator are trashed.

Get an air filter element while you are there. They are cheap and chances are yours is gone or turning into powder.

Make sure you have oil in the rear hub. People forget that one. Make sure your breaks are good.

Get a proma pipe and ride for a while. If you kit it right away it will probably be too much for you.

Hobbits for real can buck people. They have hella giddyup. Hell even I got bucked by one. That pipe hits at about 15 and if your not ready for it you can get tossed.

So yeah, before you go ahead and drop mad cash on all kinds of parts, just get a proma, new roller weights and a new air filter element. Its like 150 bones and you will do about 36 or so and get there fast.

Also, get some dual stage reeds from treats when you get the pipe. You are going to want to clean the carb and maybe upjet a size, so you might as well throw in some new reeds. Honda stock reeds are shit. Probably the worst component on the bike, with the exception of maybe the headlight bucket (where the little plastic pieces lock in at the top and break often) or the rear variator.

One last thing. This is just my opinion, but if you replace the headlight with a puch or garelli or tomos or whatever stock round headlight they look so much better. Also swapping out the bars for lower bars and swapping the grips for something cushier is a good idea.

One more last thing. Make sure your tank is clean and use 2 inline fuel filters.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

i was in that same boat dude mostly just puchs i have a camino now and its soo easy to make fast having a Vario and case inducted reeds is the jam.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

^^good advice.

seriously theres a hobbit in my home town i've been trying to buy for years, but its never happend widowed lady's just can't let go. just come to realize that this thing is gonna be way faster and funner to rip around the city than a heavy ass magnum, and you can cash in on those easy, and built the fastest moped in boston.

ill trade you a mint running MB5 motor for that.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

I have a 70cc piston kit that I only had running in my Urban for about a week or so....It`s the stocko-shocko kit from TREATS.....Nothing fancy, cleaned up ports....$100 shipped....

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Wisconsin is straight up flooooooded with hobbits.

I usually see 4 or 5 a season.

Some rip a lot harder than others. Its really weird.

Its ALL about that rear variator.

Tomosi have black wheel disease. Hobbits have variatarthritis.

Its a horrible disease. It is caused when the front variator rollers and caps get flat or busted. The front variator stops opening all the way. The rider continues riding with the reduced speed. The rear variator "gets used" to only opening 2/3 of the way. Little snags develop in the metal and even when the weights are replaced in the front the snags in the back remain and the variator wont open all the way. You lose up to 10 mph or even more.

This is exasperated by people not refilling the oil in the rear hub.

The only cure is major surgery with expensive instruments.

I have also had success with kitting and adding a notched variator to the front. If you do this you will feel the variator "snag" then your rpms will go up then it will eventually break the snag, drop the rpms and gain speed. After doing this a couple thousand times it gets a little better.

But yeah, I am jealous of the black hobbit.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

What new plate/rollers did you buy??

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

tate, you are so right. over the summer, i realized i had 5 hobbits, and i didnt pay over 50 bucks for any of them. and good luck on that black hobbit marco. the 83 black hobbit is the best year/color, and the shocks are awesome compared to other years.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Marco Marco /

oh man I hope my hobbit doesnt have variatarthritis! The back wheel feels a little tight as if the back break is on a bit. Also the guy who sold it to me said it stopped going over 20mph even after he cleaned the carb... he thought it just needed new rollers. Before I put any gas on it, i'll put on the new plate and rollers, two inline filters and check the oil in the rear gear hub.

I was hoping to get the proma pipe with the carb kit from treats together so I wouldnt have to bore out the stock jet on the honda carb.

I ordered these plate and rollers from 1977 https://www.1977mopeds.com/product/1755/Honda-Ramp-Plate-Upgrade/

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

upgrade tot he proma and use stock jet

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Marco Marco /

is that safe? putting on the proma on just the stock jet? If it is i'll totally do it.

I definitely need to replace the stock reeds with some new ones.

Also noticed on the thank that the oil/gas mix was 25:1

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Marco Marco /

SABAT why do you have a mint running MB5 motor but no MB5?!lol!

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Is that 6 roller setup for an Urban Express or a Camino?

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

I don't think that's going to work. You have to have a 6 roller variator for that. I hope I'm wrong though, because I have the same PA50II. I think they only came on Caminos.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Yep only on the camions 6 roller FTW.

And i think you'll be fine with stock jet and new pipe, hondas run a bit rich outta the box anyway.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Huh, I never even noticed the black hobbits had better rear shocks.

I see they have those springer ones and not the plastic covered ones.

Sam: Have you ever seen a black hobbit in the Wisco? I see dozens of the yellow 78-80 hobbits, a few of the 81-82 red guys, and just a couple of the 78-80 turd scrap metal 20mph ones.

It almost seems like whoever was selling all these hundreds or thousands of hobbits around here stopped before 83 and switched to urban expresses, because I see hundreds of those things too.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

not trying to thread jack but I have an '83 pa50II that I will more than likely be selling or parting out soon. Had hopes of getting it running but it is missing the ignition module in the battery box and a few other cosmetic things

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

you dont need a battery to make a hobbit run dude. if you sell it you'll regret it. they are great bikes after you get used to them. Case inducted Reeds, Variated and its a fucking honda ie it'll last foooo evaaaaaa

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Read Peter's blog!

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Gils, if you do decide to sell a black or silver 83 hobbit, holler.

I wants one.

I WANTS ONE.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

that ramp plate is not compatible.

i have a blog dedicated to hobbits that covers everything that was mentioned in this thread so far

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

I have an '82 pa50II and I love it. not sure if it matters or not but Its not the battery Its the "module, ignition control (CDI)" thats missing. I've only had it for a few weeks and cleaned it up a bit and put that piece in from my running bike and I got it running just not able to idle. I know how to fix this I just am not sure I want two of the same bike.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

i put a MB80 motor on my mb5 frame.

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Marco Marco /

damn, can I still at least use the rollers? I guess I'll just hold on to it until I get the TJT variator.

time to check out that blog!

Re: My first Honda PA50II project w/PICS

Marco, if you find yourself stuck needing some part that is not readily available, let me know and we can have a blast fabbing it at miters... have you still not seen miters!?
