Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

Here is what i've been working on with my contact from holland in order to make my tomos more reliable:

KTM 50SX Clutches retrofit into modified clutch bells and hubs in order to run them in a tomos A35/A55.

fully tuneable with the bellville spring method.

I'm on my way to install them right now. I will give you guys updates.

I have approximately $400 into this clutch setup. The KTM clutch alone is over $200 in the usa. The price in the netherlands is better, but then you still have to include machining.

I'm running DMP 2nd gear clutches, modified for malossi scooter springs.

We're trying to see if any of the 'big' moped shops are interested in selling these for the tomos guys.

if you are a high horsepower tomos guy that has struggled with clutches please reply in this thread, it's integral in knowing how many of you are out there so that we can push development further and try and get the cost a little more ideal per person. ($250-300 per bike ideally)

Alright, test ride #1:

awesome. it doesn't shift into second until i lift off and tell it to. I like that. shfits into second way later into the powerband as well. like basically redline for my bike, or as high as it wants to rev.

also it's engaging like stock right now. I need to tune the washers to get more rpm out of it before it launches.

I don't see the new pic where the clutches are in.

Matt, you know I'm interested. As we speak my gila tomos is nearing completion. I very well may need a clutch setup like that.

Try to post another pic so we can see it installed.

Great post!

wow - that looks rad.

Run 'em for a bit and let's see how they hold up : )

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

Is that the clutch from the Morini S6?

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

mattology - /

it's a clutch from a KTM 50SX, with DMP rear clutches and malossi scooter springs.

i want to ride it and blast on it some more, but i'm almost out of premix and i have a test tomorrow, FML.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

whoa crazy. so you did you reuse the stock hub?? with the new shoes and performance springs?

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

So then if it came from a 99 to 08 KTM 50sx it's a Morini S6 clutch. I'm curious to see how it handles the power... If it works this could be something really cool!

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

mattology - /

it doesn't look the same as what i'm finding on google. but yeah , it's from a 2008 ktm 50SX. should hold 13hp. we'll seeeeeeeeeee

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

that is just so sick! i want one!

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

the hubs and drums are modified and welded on in order to accept this clutch setup. we will see how long it lasts. probably "don't wake up dead" will be one of the tests of the clutch. if it survives that it will probably safe to be put for sale.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

reallllllll cool. All top shelf parts on this build. What are you using for a crank again? A55?

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

mattology - /

I think it's an A35 crankshaft in A55 cases.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

The shoes look right, but the hub looks a little different. Either way it would be a great crossover part, congrats on taking the risk!

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

Man that looks so sick! - keep us posted on the performance.

Are you sayin' the hubs and drums are welded on to the crankshaft or just welded together? If so how do you take it apart?

Is the A35 crankshaft the same diameter as an A3? I'd be interested if it'd work on an A3 and has more longevity than the stock ones...

Awesome job!

peace

it should be from an s5. s5's have tapers s6's are splined like a puch sprocket shaft.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

i was just looking at these last night. i saw you posted on that guys video on youtube with this setup matt.

so i was doing some research on the ktm 50 clucthes. i wanted to try to get the outer measurements for that clutch as the tomos bell (inner diameter) is around 86mm. i guess you solved that with a whole new bell.

I was also looking at these clutches and trying to figure out how to modify it to attach to the crankshaft. not to mention the extra 3mm on each side. who knows if the pads add to the 80mm outer diameter or if the edges of the pads are at 80mm.

the fact that it'd be 185 bucks to get one is a little on the steep side for an experiment also. but if it worked with little modification it'd be better than a $400 investment.

either way if you can get the price down a tad on this clutch setup i'd probably buy a couple of them.

nice work.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

82mm/84mm drum... is what the ktm.. is .. also is the v1.. and many other single speed clutch and drums.

Them euro guys are a long ways ahead of us over here just about like everything.

Thank you for sharing the info Matt.

well, after class today it will be more blasting time.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

Very nice! I recently replaced both clutches in my A35 with new stock parts for around $200.00. Your proposal seems reasonable in comparison.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

hmmmmm. are you getting nasty vibes?? is this setup pretty balanced? These tomos vibe incessantly, and i can just imagine the vibes comin from a 74cc monster.

1st gear looks like ya welded an inner liner in there to make up the space? whats a DMP 2nd gear? conceivably couldnt ya do this for 2nd gear also? Also do these clutches use spring washers or a coil spring like the tomos? questions! questions!

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

They vibrate due to the piston weight being different and not balanced to the crank whatsoever. All bikes do this but for some reason the Tomos seem to do it more.

Re: Tomos A35/A55 KTM Clutch Setup

mattology - /

the KTM clutch uses belleville springs. i said in an earlier post that yes, the bell and hub were modified in order to accept this clutch with both machining and welding.

There feels to be less vibration than stock.

dmp second gear clutch shoes are just that, clutch shoes on my second gear, manufactured by dmp.
