Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I think?

So, I've been reading the performance tuning spreadsheet and looking at Peter's specs and it looks as though he's hitting 55 mph with a kit, modded variator, and a pipe. Am I missing anything here?

As my Hobbit sits right now, I've got a Proma Circuit and Boyesen reeds. I can get close to 40 on flat ground.

I'm waiting for the DR kit to be back in stock at Treats, then I'll be picking up one of those.

I'm also going to trim my variator walls. I need to pick up some PA50I weights. Where can I find these? Anything else I need for the variator mods?

Is the kit just a bolt-on? Something I can do with basic tools, right?

Is the variator easy to get at as well? The trimming job doesn't seem all that difficult...

I know I'll need to upjet too. Peter runs a "90." So I'll need to pick one of those up. Where can I buy jets?

Thanks! Would be awesome if I could have this thing hitting 50-55 on level ground!

Holler at QK. They have kits for the hobbit in stock, but you will have to shot them an email to get it. One of the owners Nick has a stock mod hobbit that did 51.3 GPS with my 190 pounds on it.

so easy a caveman can do it

Last time I checked - westernhillshondayamaha had PA50I weights in stock.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

Alright, sweet, just found a local place that has the jet I need and the PA50I weights, which I believe is part # 22121-148-710. Maybe someone can confirm? And it looks like I'll need three weights, right? I haven't popped the variator off to check yet.

Hey miker, do you know what kits they have over there at QK? Otherwise, I'll shoot them an e-mail.

Thanks.

I want to say that they had the Polini or Parma or something. An email would be your best bet. I shot the photos for them a few weeks back, but I shot like 8 or 9 kits so I don' t remember what was what.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

The malossi is a pretty good deal. 1977 has them in stock and the come with a jet, and a drill bit for other jets, plus other random stuff like copper crush gasket and lots of stickers.

Its cheaper than the DR. I have run the DR and like it a lot. I have never run a malossi, but I hear they are just as good.

I have a brand new malossi kit I want to sell if you want to buy it. It still has all the bits and pieces including the jet.

Come to think of it I think I have a notched variator around here if you want to buy that too.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

malossi, and a 6 roller set up with a proma pipe = 50mph easy

just make sure to upjet or drill it slightly and the bigger reed set will even help more if you run a 19mm carb

I have some plates and weights here, a race crank and polini kit some DR are on the way also

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

ffreddie, you were able to find a DR kit? I've been waiting as well. Anyone know where I could get a DR?

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

I think Fred means that he has that stuff for sale. How much are you selling a DR kit for, Fredie?

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

hobbits are so easy.

Pipe + kit + jet = 45 all day long

Pipe + kit + jet + hacked vario = 55 all day long

I love the DR because its powerful, inexpensive, easy to get replacement pistons/rings, and because i ripped the shit out of mine for 2000 miles and when i pulled it apart it still looked brand new.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

I have a bike like this also, camino

the DR is made and will be here soon rightnow all I have is polini and malossi and 1 special autisia kit

also some heads with no decopression some camino motors, 6 roller set ups, fast arrow plates and weights, proma pipes.

maybe an intake set up have to find them

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

revolutionize!

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

Hey Ffred, I;m dropping you an email about camino varios.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

yeah remember what peter said about dr being new after 2000 miles? i bought that kit from him and ripped it apart after ehhhh another 1000+ miles or so- it had some carbon in the exhaust port. i got mad when i chipped it off easily and it landed on the cylinder wall which still had hone marks in it.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

I skipped the notched variator, even tho I made one. . . and went with the TJT Variator.

I just need to install my read pulley spring someday.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

Leave the rear spring alone

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

I have two. 1978 Pa50 II

One 50cc

One 70cc

both TJT, Proma, reeds, clutch springs.

Should I leave both rear springs alone, it looks dangerous, I'm at the last part, and I do not want to explode it in my face.

Anyone have good luck with the TJT rear springs??

I'll take the "no, don't do it option".

But maybe the 70cc will benefit.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

I ran a TJT for a while with modified weights and the stock rear spring. My bike never gave me the RPMs to variate the stock weights. The only problem I really encountered was it really wore out my rear pulley. The spring still worked- but as the days went on it got slacker and slacker... Till I got a euro pulley. You can also just crack open the rear vario and stretch the spring back out, too.

I would listen to Peter on the issue of switching the springs. Don't do it.

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

ffreddie, what store are you?

Re: Hitting 50 mph on a Hobbit - as easy as I thin

Which is rad
