Hobbit Vario Theory

givens: kitted hobbit, N8P pipe, 24 mikuni, notched vario, pa50i weights- 9.3g, stock rear pulley spring.

the pa50i weights dont get into the powerband. homemade bronze tube weights @ 7.2g are crazy high revving, all up in the powerband 60+

the high revving setup will prob self destruct in under 500 miles and just isnt good for a cruise. will adding a stiffer rear spring allow me to use the pa50i weights and keep revs high? my guess is the TJT 6 roller isnt worth it in this situation. just a mater of getting the correct weights and rear spring combo. thoughts?

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

my guess is your notching isnt very clean and the weights arent moving smoothly.

the PA50-1 weights should be perfect for that setup.

dont mess with the rear spring its not going to give you the solution you're looking for.

find a stock derbi 6 roller (not the TJT, which is no good for hobbits).

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

other ideas: bad carb tuning, over-carburetion, maybe your powerband hits right away when you want it to hit later?

rear pulley not functioning right?

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

I have a 6 roller set up and a ramp plate

think they are 4 gram weights

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

forgot to mention.. the above situation uses a dayco belt- alot narrower than OEM. during lunch brake i threw on the stock belt w/ above setup. revs are way down. low 50s and doesnt take advantage of the powerband. would a derbi or malossi spring up the revs?

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

think you are right about the carb. the 105 seems rich. and checking the homemade weights, they are getting chewed up on the lip of the ramp plate

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

grease the weights and use a stock belt. the only luck i ever had with belts were stock, all others caused problems

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

the 20 mile ride home was epic. the variator closed at 43mph making some huge hills easy. but the brass got chewed to shit. the grease just sprays out of the notches

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

If power is good ...drive is working properly (variator, rollers ramps)...belts good...crank should bust letting you know your machine was right....cuz the only hobbits I have ever seen that were "REALLY' Fast was Peters and Nates...Me and Nate buzzin along at 55mph...on shitty gas...got one more hit and was able to pull away (barrely)....fun fun...Thanx kzoo for effin up 3 of our bikes...(GAS) wiil share this amazing fact ...The bike I barrelly squeekedby Nate on... I blasted a scooter not really down for serious semi blastin...dude gave me the wrong look ..true story...so I came up on in this 4 spd 175 malosseed out Vespa comer...but I had SHAW gas.....all cars on P.C.H...ballin....65plus...I advise against doing this ...but when a Vespa comes on you to run and wants to run with a moped. you gotta do do what do best....kick rocks...it was amazing three lanes were involved(I usedem all )..and dude said 70+ mph had to have been in the mix

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

65+ = deathmachine. thats some heroic bastin.

week before portland snapped the crank w/ a skinny belt and unmodified vario- so it woulnt close fully. fn highrevs. insane acceleration, you sand up on the pedals the front wheel starts rising.

in the end i think that the parma doesnt really match up with the n8p pipe. the parma is more low end.

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

i will say it over and over. stock 30 year old belts are the only belt to use.

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

I'm starting to agree with you, Peter.

I first switched to the fast arrow- it's kinda long, but it never slips, then the endurance- which wore down quick and slipps like a SOB. Now I'm back to the Fast arrow- may go back to the old stock belt soon. Problem is my stock belts are hells of stretched out- I suppose the fast arrow is about the same.

Also, tracking down a derbi vario is much easier said than done. At least when you aren't Peter

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

actually i searched for over a year to find one, then stumbled across one on accident.

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

Yeah... You'd think with all the kids running around with Derbis here in PDX someone would have an extra to give up. Phhhh... I wonder if handybikes still has em?

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

Actually I have the vario I just need the plate.

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

one of the derbi variators I just had had a extra lip that was used as a limiter on it. How many folks have used one of those on there hobbit, it chopped a grove into a belt. I ended up turning the lip off in the my lathe to make it work.

Re: Hobbit Vario Theory

What a great thing to stumble upon.

If you have the derbi 6 weight the tjt ramp plate will work.
