doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

this variator is to the varplus as the varplus is to the stock variator, which is to say its a 100% improvement in all aspects of functionality. the biggest difference is that its smooth, smooth, smooth. form the moment it hits all the way up through the power band there is absolutely no vibration and almost no dead spots. in fact, it basically feels like you start IN the powerband, and things only get better from there. add to that the fact that it is completely easy to install (literally a tighten one nut), and its superiority in every way becomes more evident. yes, its slightly annoying to have to jam in a folded piece of paper to start it every time, but i dont feel like paying $250 for a clutch pulley. only drawback is that for maybe a second while the engine spins up it bogs, though its not really a bog in the traditional sense; more like a slight hesitation. either way, its way, way less of a bog/hesitation than either a stock or kitted+ varplus moby. i'm already in love with this thing, and its one of the last important components of my av7 supermoby build. completely worth the $150 or so if you're going for a serious build.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

that bog sounds like you need to play with your weights a bit. rad bike!

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

Duuuuuuuude......

That sounds rad, man.

Is Ben Eberle going to have to get one of these?

Flat bars!?! When did this all happen? I feel like I don't even know who you are anymore.....

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

indeed. i just threw all heavies on and havent even tuned it because ive been filled with glee. thanks a lot, im waiting on a vlx seat to make it look a little cooler.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

ben i am now faster than you. discussion over. unless you get an er3, in which case: discussion not over. definitely buy this, though. remember how excited we were when we all put our varplusses on at the same time? multiply that x5 to understand how fucking awesome this thing is.

had those bars custom made for me by a friend who you should meet. he is just entering the world of the moby himself.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

lol at ben speaking in the third person.

whats next, av10?

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

next is i get an actual girlfriend and stop dicking around with mopeds all day.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

Wait Jay aren't you married

Um maybe that is someone else

Lets race.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

what is your unactual girlfriend? your hand?

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

keep it clean, utah. we're talking about mopeds.

this is the er3 w/ clutch, but no idle bearing, correct? Do you just jam cardboard in (all easy) or do you have to pull the belt to make it work?

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

it actually has an idle bearing, which is what necessitates the cardboard jamming thing. the way it works is that when the variator is completely closed (cheeks as far apart as possible), the belt actually sits directly on top of the idle roller bearing while touching either of the cheeks, so if you try to push start, the belt wont move. but by shimming the cheeks closer together, you can force them to grab the belt, thus making the whole thing spin and turn the engine over. to do this, i usually have to pop the belt off, but thats super easy and only takes a second. DEFINITELY worth it, especially as this isnt my daily driver.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

Wow....man, bold prediction! But probably true.

I'm thinking that i'm going to wait and just do the whole clutch pulley - ER3 variator purchase at once.

Nice review too. I'm assuming its the same deal to put it on?

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

ive heard a lot of sketchy things about the clutch pulley, so im a little leery. but basically this thing has made me completely happy with my moped at long last. and yeah, putting it on is about as difficult as tightening down a bolt. if/when i ever go full av10, then i'll consider a clutch pulley. but for now, this is going to be really fun for at least the rest of the year.

come check it out on a ride sometime!

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

don't let the nay sayers fool you. Everyone who races a French bike in the Polini Cup, uses a clutch pulley. EVERYONE.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

yeah actually my clutch pulley has been more reliable then the stock clutch on my peugeot. All the torque would just break the stock clutch discs at least once a month.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

so what cylinder is that? It looks like you're running the much loved G3 pipe

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

ninja is a great pipe. doppler is even better.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

Oh, word, Allen? I'm in the market to replace the Leo Vinci.

Doppler is my next purchase, then.

And, yeah, Jay...I'll definitely see it soon. I'm in Maine now, but back next week. Maybe to the Cape for the week, though, so I'll probably see it the following week. That thing sounds just super sweet. I've never ridden one, but seen many in person. Sure looks like the real deal. I'm still very intrigued by the pure LAUNCH that the clutch pulley is going to give me, like....revs to the moon before it grabs. My guess is that my crank shaft will give out before the clutch pulley does.

I've got my Moby in super blast mode finally. Down jetted, raised the needle, and dremeled the throttle so it actually opens the carb all the way now. Gave me at least 2-3 more mm's of pull on the carb. It now feels like the leaky exhaust is keeping me back a bit. Doppler FTW!!!

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

Frostback Ditch /

Love the bike. Where abouts did you get those white walls? I could really use some for my Moby.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

stock - sheered

doppler - sheered

parma - sheered

doppler endurance - holding strong

malossi - never tried it.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

Oh man.....hmmmm....maybe I should hold off on that clutch pulley. Damn thing runs so well right now it's kind of a 'if it's not broke, don't fuck with it...'

So, I'll think about it.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

haha. ben, you only think its running well because youve never run an er3. if you want, we can pop off your variator and throw my er3 on. itll take under 10 minutes.

i'll go clutch pulley next year, maybe, when av10 build time comes around. i jsut want to ride this thing for the rest of the year.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

Jay

I like your forks

I said lets race.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

nice moves jay. glad to hear youve got a setup that is finally cooperating.

oh ps the CDI HT coil is not compatible with the points plate and vice versa. figured id get back to ya on that one.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

i have the fastest moped in boston. there can be no doubt, and i am yet to hit full speed as i value my life.

julian, i believe that our bikes may be equal. i cant wrap my head around how completely insane this thing is now. my only advantage, if any, might be that i now have these massive beasts installed, whereas a hard tail would be devastated by the horrendous streets in these parts.

steve, thanks for the update. rest of my sadly non-ducati cdi stuff is in the mail right now. also, another maine ride was tossed around today. lets do it.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

ps, i kind of wish i had installed the endurance now, rather than the base-level doppler crank. but so far, so good.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

after getting my clutch pulley a few days ago, and opening up and doing the wiki suggested mainenance, feel like the only thing that could unreliable would be that one way bearing. keep it greased is what I'm feeling. I alsom shimed the axle, and the three clutch shoes due to the sloppy and suggestions from other folks.

shimmed and greased seems like the winner.

Re: doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

yea man give me a ring whenever about any rides up our way. ill try to get some guys together so maybe we can head down to a wednesday ride. i think my moby is going to be spending some time in Research and Development until i can get it back to life, but ive got my beater Sally Sachs i can bring down.

did you get the yamaha unrestricted CDI box? youre going nowhere fast without it.

doppler ER3 w/clutch (for moby)

2 variators> one

Fastest bike, for now...
