If you have steep diverging and converging cones in your pipe design then the carboration requirement will be different when the pipe comes on vs when it doesn't. Its difficult to get the mixture curve to fluctuate in a way that compliments the pipe so you many times end up with a compromize like a bit lean on the pipe and a bit rich when off the pipe.

Ceramic coating, larger clearances and piston cooling mods are important so you don't have to worry about the lean condition when it happends.

Or of course shallow pipe tapers make the carboration easier but with less total horsepower, but how much fun is that.
