Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

So, I'm confused. I am running an 82 jet on my 70cc maxi with a 15mm bing. I am trying to upjet because with the 80 jet, my plug chops were waaaaay lean. Really white. However, with that same 80 jet, the ped ran really well. Nice low and top end. Now, with the 82 and also with an 84, it runs the same up to half or 3/4 throttle (runs well), but the top end is boggy beyond belief. I can't even really do a decent plug chop with these bigger jets because it'll die when I give it too much throttle for more than a few seconds. What should I do?

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

Have you dropped your needle one or two notches?

You have to work through both observations.

A white plug is no good, but of course, neither is a boggy top end.

No. I haven't ever changed the needle. Should I?

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

Try moving the needle up and down with the 82 and 84 to see if that fixes it, but from what I understand needle position has nothing to do with top end on bings. Maybe try moving the needle up a notch on the 80?

I guess if you aren't seizing then things are good so far haha

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

oh also check for airleaks

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

Put the 80 back in. One step below running shitty is totally safe. I trust my bike's sound and performance more than a plug chop.

Since installing my current kit with my current setup, I've done 300 miles of some fairly hard riding. Is it safe to say that with the jet I've been using, I will not seize in the future?

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

No it might have worked for now and might seize tomorrow. Weather conditions can effect it, so running a little lean, might come back to bite you. Also remember a bike running lean will run great until it goes bad.

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

If you have steep diverging and converging cones in your pipe design then the carboration requirement will be different when the pipe comes on vs when it doesn't. Its difficult to get the mixture curve to fluctuate in a way that compliments the pipe so you many times end up with a compromize like a bit lean on the pipe and a bit rich when off the pipe.

Ceramic coating, larger clearances and piston cooling mods are important so you don't have to worry about the lean condition when it happends.

Or of course shallow pipe tapers make the carboration easier but with less total horsepower, but how much fun is that.

So, the question remains...

How do I not run lean (80) and not bog down to like 27 (82)? There are no jets in between those sizes!!!

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

How long have you been running the plugs you're chopping? Sometimes it just takes a while for a plug to color up.

You are brilliant. I was using new plugs for the plug chops. I just did a 70 mile ride and now the plug, with the 80 jet that I like, looks as delicious as it feels. Thanks everyone!

Re: Jet Size - Performance or Plug Color?

I'd be careful, a nice colored plug after 70 miles be reflecting that richer top end condition. Keep that 80, and put your needle on the riches setting(so the clip is as near the tapered end as it can get)....if your low end doesn't suffer too much and you still have decent throttle response, you should be fine. At the very lease, make some needle adjustments.
