treat puch cdi conked out... help?

(Casserollers) Gregory B. /

puch cdi.

bought treats cdi two weeks ago and installed it...

everything worked fine, fired up on first try...

i was randomly riding and it shut down on me. get a ride back home and there's no spark.

no connections got wiggled loose and everything was still intact.

checked continuity on everything and everything checks out alright although there is still no spark. headlight lights when clutch engaged and tail light works too, both are bright, but no spark no go.

any tips? help? something i should check for or that i'm doing wrong?

i ordered another cdi to swap out if worse comes to worse, but if i get this one running i'll throw it on my other magnum.

someone help!

thanks,

gregory

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

spark plug? spark plug boot? lights sound grounded, but what about the coil being grounded?

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

Had the exact same thing happen to me the other day Greg. I checked it tonight, and I'm guessing coil. I got power to the wire going to the coil, but nothing coming out of the coil. BEEP BEEP

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

I just had one of these quit working after around 30 miles. The culprit was the main coil in the stator getting hot and melting. The resistance through the coil dropped to 0 and one of the wires that was touching it melted the housing. New CDI time I guess.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

faulty coil?

solid state stuff can be tricky some times

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

I was baffled by both a cdi box and coil going out at the same time so watch for multiple problems. Mine was on a yamaha

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

did you guys notice anything funny before it went out and where were yours mounted? i didnt think about heat issues and mounted my coil and regulator right above the cylinder where the stock one used to go and i think i partially cooked it. shes starting to act a little funny at higher rpms

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

two stroke bible says though shalt keep as many electronics away from heat as possible. try to put it somewhere away from the motor where it catches some wind.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

It was the coil under the flywheel, no chance of moving I'm afraid. totally melted the wires attached to it as well.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

Mine was stuffed inside the frame. I believe I just had the wires too twisted around.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

this is interesting. you guys are all talkin puch, but im a frenchy and my moby CDI did similar. very similar to greg's original post:

i installed it, nailed it first time. rode great for about two weeks. went riding with a buddy doing some GPS speed runs. finally we pulled over to have a cigarette and let our engines cool down. _I_ killed my engine, and we chilled for 20 minutes or so. when i went to start back up, no dice!

got it trucked home and over the next 3-4 days i did nothing but rewire it, try different wires, plugs, caps, etc. nothing worked, no matter what i could not get spark. i emailed treats and he sent me a new unit to try out until i could diagnose the issue. well the first thing i swapped out was the stator and it fired right up after that. so i guess it was the stator? id still like to put the old one back on real quick to see if maybe it was a fluke.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

Did treats replace it for free?

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

bumpity,

Yea,

Were you given replacements? I understand the "as-is" nature of selling moped parts, but a properly engineered and manufactured CDI shouldn't stop working after two weeks.

I'm looking to order a CDI, from Treats, and I'd like to know if anyone else has run into these problems.

thanks!

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

I'm not saying I think Benji should give them free replacements, just wondering...

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

nope. the deal was he'd send me a new unit and i could swap components until i found the faulty one, then pay him for that and send back the rest. i swapped out the stator and it worked so i was happy enough and just left it.

since then that stator went bad too.

i did some diagnostics and its the internal ignition coil going bad. both times. i took an ignition coil off my friend's functioning CDI and it fired up first try. measured 350 ohms. the two igny coils that have went on me both measured circa 150. not a coincidence. i guess they are getting too hot and melting thru the enamel coating, and shorting themselves.

treats now sells the components individually, so i ordered two new igny coils and im going to start running a voltage regulator and hope for the best. also it says that the puch ignition coil and moby are pretty close, and are interchangable with some hacking. one might be better than the other, so im going to look into trying both. if neither yields long term success, im gonna wind my own damn coil with better wire than they use on those coils.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

I've had the same problem on 2 so far, and I think I'm going to rewind the coil with better wire and see if I get better time out of it. Or change the internal resistance or output in such a away to limit the heat generated.

Same happened to me on two of these. Tried new coil, no dice. Now I am trying a new pickup. I will also check again for melted wires on stator.

Yikes. All these threads are making me worry about my CDI. It's rockin' strong so far. I swear with that thing my bike revs so hard it's not even like a moped anymore.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

weird, i'm at a 1000 miles with no problems. are you guys running a flywheel cover?

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

The guys with the issues: are you running without the voltage regulator?

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

someone suggested a voltage regulator in line before the cdi box. I doubt that would help performance, but hey, its an idea.

My personal theory is that its related to the box. I dunno why, but I've run 2 or 3 stators, all with the same separate box and coil (I think its the hero box 77 sells, but not sure), and I've had zero issues, many miles, most of them at very high rpms and temps.

If you have any issues, you should probably contact treats, see what they can do for you. They have a ton of spare parts for these now, so a solution can probably be made. I guess you gotta remember they are made in india, in very large quantities, and a poor solder joint or small short, or high temps can do big damage.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

I was thinking that different boxes have different resistances to them and some could cause more heating issues than others, I was using the ZA type II box on this ignition that has burned out two. For those of you you have burned them out what coil were you running?

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

i have not been running a voltage regulator on my moby CDI. i am going to start to see if it makes a difference.

i personally have not had any issues with the Yamaha unlimited CDI box. its been 100% internal coil related for me thus far.

my thead came back from the dead.

my problem was my coil, incase anyone was wondering.

swapped mine and it fired right up.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

internal (ignition) coil? I've got about 2-3 hundred miles on mine - no probs so far. e50 treats type, a voltage regulator, flywheel cover, etc.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

yep, internal ignition aka primary coil. the one that came with the moby treats kit. maybe ill try an e50 type.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

i've got an e50 coil, no problems.

Re: treat puch cdi conked out... help?

Yea, my CDI just died last night. I'm going to guess the same problem. Looks like a Treats order is in my future.
