Ive been repeatedly trying to fix the leak between my phbg and the header. i canot use the plastic insert because the intake pipe's OD is too large. ive been using super tack gasket sealent and its just not working. does anyone have any suggestions? im tearing my hair out at this point

Similar situation going on in this topic too.. http://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/discuss/7/167656/167656/

I've tried an O-ring which some people say is successful, as well as sanding down where the clamps meet.

Silicone? Rvt?

Got a pic?

i shall try the tips posted in that thread, thanks.

I havent been able to locate any gasoline resistant silicon. Will update with pics if my next attempt fails...

Re: how to fix carb leak between carb & header

So is there any space at all between the carb and the intake? Like any difference in diameter? If so, make a spacer from a cardboard cereal box. That's what I did. (Actually I used low-fat white cheddar Cheez-Its.)

Re: how to fix carb leak between carb & header

Tightly wound electrical tape makes a good spacer...

Re: how to fix carb leak between carb & header

Grinder, the suggestion of removing .5-1mm of material where the clamps meet fixed my problem for me, no amount of RTV / O-Rings matched that solution. Do yourself a favor and get a little sand paper in between that gap and take it down nice and slow evenly and you'll be much happier.

Aluminum shim. ie soda can

removing material from the clamp helped heaps! still have a slight leak, will try 0 rings and some fresh gasket sealant and see if that doesnt solve the problem once and for all.

crossing my fingers

not enough room for shims unfortunately. :P

Re: how to fix carb leak between carb & header

this is why spigot carbs are paradise. most fresh gasket sealant even the good stuff by permatex, rtv silicone and elastomeric rubber (right stuff) will fail from gasoline exposure after a few hundred miles. rtv quicker and right stuff lasting a lot longer.

if i was in your situation i would try to find the appropriate intake for the clamp carb or trade for a spigot carb. trying to match a header to a clamp phbg is a nightmare

BUT

just remembered amanda bandit got sent a clamp carb by mistake once and we turned it into a spigot style carb so she could mount it to her header intake

you just need to find an old long socket ~17mm and cut the hollow section off and jam it into the clamp. usually they are well machined around so you never have to worry about an airleak. then just go to autozone and get radiator hose and clamp it down with hose clamps. solid solid solid solution.

good luck dude. airleak troubleshooting sucks.

Re: how to fix carb leak between carb & header

I forgot I did this once and used that foil tape to make shim; worked well but needed to replace every time the carb came off.
