another K-star piston gone...(pics)

well just got the compression tester in thew mail testing my PSI, my ped put out 200 PSI cold, so i took it for a ride to get it warmed up to test again warm... well while riding about 1/4 throttle cruising about 37-40 it makes a loud POP! and looses all compression, i was thinking the whole time peddling back to my house that i blew a hloe in my piston for have so much compression and tooo advanced timing.... but i really dont think that is the case anymore.... i think the piston circlip is to blame, it didnt come out all the way but a tiny chip off the end of broke and some how got into the roller bearing and caused it to fail ! heres some pics, and a cool one of a piece of the roller stuck in the piston head...

the cylinder is fine though, thank god i got one more piston..

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

no way dude. needle bearing only. it blowed up.

btw, what the hell are you doing to your circlips to make them look like that?

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

i have no idea, they were stright and fine when i put them in.... and that is what they look like after this..

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

oh yea my crank is a DMP unstuffed..

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

Klen Kahdidlehopper /

maybe the pliers you are using to install them are putting that little bend in the clips.

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

those pits in your piston crown on from too advanded timing / high compression

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

You sure they're not from that piece of circlip getting beat against the head?

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

the whole needle bearing exploded, that is chunks of it on the piston.

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

damn dude you're a thrasher!!

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

yep. needle bearings and circlips nneed to be checked regularly. Had a bearing cage crack on me, but somehow the rollers didnt get misplaced, and saving my bottom end and jug from otherworldly catastrophic damage

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

yea buddy i love to go fast, and yes the motor will be torn down cleaned and rebuilt ...again.... and i will say this once again, THE K-STAR KIT IS A BEAST !!! and yes those are needles sticking out of the piston..

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

Would you happen to remember what position you left the open end of the circlip? They will compress/collapse if the open end is at the 3 or 9 o'clock positions .Also , was the circlip groove squeaky clean ?

Too bad they don't make teflon buttons for the wristpins that small . We used those on all our Datsun engines for the very same reason .

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

yea ken he had them installed right.

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

I just put together a K-star kit myself (literally last night). On the compression gauge this thing pushed 210 psi and then the gauge actually gave out. I don't want this thing blowing up, what precautions can I take to prevent this from happening to me? Don't crank up the timing?

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

deff not the timming... also what head are you running? and at least 2 base gaskets... and good oil in your mix w/ high octane fuel like 93...

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

alright so i got it all back together w/ the new piston(used) and circlips(barley used) roller bearing(used on stocker) and i also threw my stock 2HP head on insted of the 70hi-comp, and it sounds alot more like a moped insted of the real nasty matalic sound... havnt checked compression yet but if feels less wich is going to be better..

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

you should also check your compression when it is fully warmed up for an accurate reading.

Re: another K-star piston gone...(pics)

same thing happened to me on my frist k star kit.i did a tare down and used the same clips.fail.
