Bartell- I don't know. I doubt it would need a battery. I pulled the wiring out of the junk bike and it seems complex but doable. 4 Wires from the stator 1 from the pickup 1 from a coil linked to the pickup and 2 from a seperate coil. The pickup and linked wires seem to run straight off to the CDI box while the other two dance around and juice the battery and lights and nonsense until they eventually come around and end at the CDI box. The Hobbit and Express have the same stator and woodruff key layout- so that is easy.
I think I'm going to find a step up booster or whatever they are called - like this guy http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360165333328&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:us for my pump issue, but still attempt to put the CDI in a hobbit. I'll probably do it to my crappy commuter bike, It's been needing some tuning love forever.
