Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT

Breaking in a new 50cc MBK cylinder. Just started it up today. SHA 15, Jetted 68, 32:1 motul 2T double ester.

Let it idle for 10 minutes then started riding. Runs great at all throttle positions, no weirdness anywhere. Checked for airleaks all over, everything is cool. Should I be okay to blast it now? It's 50cc and unported, seems pretty safe to me. Especially in SF where I won't be riding WOT for days.

Also.... exhaust screwing in. New crush gasket, I screwed it in until it was hard to screw in (I can still see one or two threads at the base of the exhaust nut), warmed it up, then screwed it in more. It's not easy to turn anymore so I don't wanna crank any harder but I can still see a couple threads peaking out from the cylinder, so it's not screwed in _all the way_.

Thoughts? Thanks.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

So stoked to be on the road again, on this gorgeous, hot, San Francisco (pride) day. Maybe I'll slip into the dykes on bikes parade with my little 50cc moped. hahaha.

Thanks for the tips, I've done all the searching, read many folks opinions, but they all concern 70cc kits that rip at 40mph. I'm doin' low 30s tops.

torque is pretty good on this cylinder too. way better than my old stock one.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

Careful letting it idle so long. When air isn't moving across the engine, there isn't much cooling and you could seize. Honestly, you should break it in, but I always just blast. I don't want a lazy cylinder.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

good tip on the break-in, especially since it's very warm in SF today.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

the 70cc kits are doing a lot more than 40 or they're doing it wrong.

just blast man, ride everything like you stole it always. esp WOT

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

I've heard you don't want to use Motul until after you break it in. Synthetic stuff's too good and I understand it won't allow the slight friction you need for your cylinder and piston to match up well...

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

i can't believe you guys are telling him to ride it hard. this could very easily end in tears.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

I've read other people saying that a double ester synthetic is fine. I dunno. So many opinions, seems like there's no general rule. It rode fine yesterday, fuck it.

How do you not ride hard on 50cc?

I feel like the break in period is a bit of a myth. The first few miles are about the most important for seating the rings, thats about it.

Break in your motor with whatever oil you plan on running it on but just up the mix to 32:1 or 25:1 for the first tank of gas and then back down to the ratio you plan on using.

thanks finny. just what I wanted to hear, haha.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

hey dude i just broke in a new 50cc moby cylinder as well (technix brand from QK).

i mixed regular oil (dont use synthetic ever anyways), and took it "easy" for the first 50 miles. vary your throttle a bit, dont hold WOT for more than 2 or 3 seconds if that. at about 50/60 miles i went to a rally and said fuck it, blast time. been runnin great.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

well there ya go, everyone says something different.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

There are tales of blasters using synthetic from day one and some months down the road slipping in some crude and seizing. The hypothesis behind this is that most synthetics have about 5 times the film strength of crude and therefor it takes the rings longer to wear into the cylinder. Slipping some rougher stuff in there and blasting, maybe, before everything is seated leads to seizure. However, most of these kind of stories come from the Polini folks, so it doesn't take much to lead to failure with those and changing from synth to crude may be enough in the early stages. Synthetic IS better, BUT I would break her in with crude.

Re: Idle for 5 Minutes, THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOL

Well I missed all that syn v. crude conversation and broke my 70cc kit in on 50:1 Motul syn at a rally while blasting at 50mph the whole time. Break in = 2-3 short heat cycles of low rpm getting the rings set a little and then blast away.
