ram air. bad?

i have a maxi w/phbg on my dmp 70cc. i have it pointing 45 degrees from the cylinder. it gets some ram air. why is this bad? it runs well. i have a cone shaped wire mesh filter in it. my only concern is that if i dump the bike on that side it's gonna be ugly.

what's up dudes? tell me about your intakes.

Re: ram air. bad?

mine points forward, shouldnt matter if you jet right

Re: ram air. bad?

yeah, that's what i'm thinking, but i keep reading posts where people talk about it like it's a big no no.

Re: ram air. bad?

Ever hung your head out of a car window and tried to take a deep breath? It's not going to hurt anything if you are jetting right...

Re: ram air. bad?

Ha..take a deep breath and get a bug in your throat..now that would be ugly..I was told ram air makes no difference because your carb limits air intake and with the bend in the intake that slows it down also..F' ram air..

Re: ram air. bad?

Lets say you set your jetting up in calm warm weather, then one day you are flying down the street into a strong headwind that is also colder. Then suddenly the engine bogs and dies down.

Re: ram air. bad?

its bad for carbs with one jet cause if its rich enough for ram air then it might not idle. But you have a PHBG so you can make it happen.

Re: ram air. bad?

two strokes do not like to be forced. Just like how cuperzacko doesnt like it when i ram my cock down his throat.

Re: ram air. bad?

dead air is the best. Well thats what Shaw told me once

Re: ram air. bad?

HAHA!

Re: ram air. bad?

Two strokes LOVE a bit of the nasty. Detroit diesels were ALL "forced", a properly designed expansion chamber is all about "forcing".

The only disadvantage of ram air is that it is not 100% predictable, sometimes you will be a bit rich, sometimes a bit lean.

Re: ram air. bad?

I see no problems as long as you jet it right and make sure you take good plug chops after riding up to speed with a good load on the engine.

Re: ram air. bad?

I use ram air on a 19phbg 70cc dr express. It loves it. I actually find that I can fine tune it (as per weather conditions) by changing the angle of the intake. I feel like I might have soft seized it once though in part because of the ram air. Basically, I was ripping in the upper 40's and went straight from WOT to closed all the way. I seized it right then and there. I think pretty much what happened is there was so much air being forced down its throat, but it was only getting idle jet fuel. I feel like this might have been part of the cause, but I was also running crappy oil in a kitted bike that was used to the good stuff.

I can tell you that when I had that set up jetting properly with a regular hi flow filter, I got up to about 44. The bent ram air filter added at least 3-4 mph and quite a bit of rpms to it. Honestly, at least in my set ups case, it almost feels like a turbocharger when the pipe hits then the air starts getting forced. That could be part of the crappy intake on expresses, having a sharper than 90 degree bend.

Re: ram air. bad?

ram air is really false. I will spare you the physics but at 100km/h the increase in pressure is .05psi. You may benifit from the cooler ambient air away from the engine but ram air is not really efficent till you break 480km.

Re: ram air. bad?

It doesnt even come close to being able to make a difference at moped speeds.

Re: ram air. bad?

I think the turbulence must make a difference. Better mixture. I guess I can't debate the physics of it with you, but all I know is that on my current set up with the same air filter pointed up, it four strokes. With the same air filter pointed forward, it runs perfect. Thats proof enough for me.

Re: ram air. bad?

i used to run my phbg poiting straight forward with a velocity stack, no filter at all

that thing was like a fucking BULLET

however i had to clean my carb every couple of rides...haha

Re: ram air. bad?

I kind of enjoy cleaning carbs. Something soothing about it.

Re: ram air. bad?

yeah, i mean if you dont mind it then go for it, i LOVED that setup.

however it was at a rally...and that kinda sucked. plus i was having air leaks already, taking the carb on and off probably wasnt helping

but i was definitely hitting mid-50s.
