Primary Gear Drive

my clutch plate lost some small bits of metal, which in turn got into the primary gear drive and then spat back out by the clutch. we have all the metal out, but ... a couple of teeth, only the ones in the pics, got a little scraped up. would you just replace it off the bat (as I am inclined to do) or run it for awhile and then replace it? have not started the bike since this happened and it only makes noise when you push it backwards.

Re: Primary Gear Drive

Run it till it spews a violent metal death to your engine, then put in new bearings and buy a new one.

its fine. just get a needle file and file in between the teeth so they mesh smoothly.

Re: Primary Gear Drive

yeah that looks totally minor.

thanks, Philip. I totally appreciate the advice ... it's not too bad and I am sure it would hold up for a long time. However, before I read this I went ahead and got a new gear drive. I "had the money" on a credit card (lol) and figured that either way, I would eventually need it. definitely will replace the bearings and seals when I get around to doing this. I do wonder how long it would last like this. I am definitely going to the Reno rally next month and that's a nice long ride to the Cali border and back. I am off work for a few weeks so I am leaning towards just rebuilding it now. at the same time, it seems daunting to me that I started all of this (mopeds) 10 months ago and would even consider rebuilding a bottom end ...
