so i got my cdi from the first run that benji sold as a complete set. im running it on a e50 and it seems to work, didnt really notice a difference in ppower but i didnt mess with the timing yet i just threw it in and started running around on it. but i went to the beans ride this weekend and drew said something about it maybe being a za box. do the e50 box's and za50 boxes look different? on the treats website the boxes look the same in each picture. like this
I'm wondering what the difference between the two boxes are and why a ZA50 box won't work on an E50 or the reverse? Maybe someone can chime in with an explanation. They may have different curves but I don't see why you couldn't make either work well if you use a timing light. You may have to modify the stator plate to make the ZA box work on the E50. I just got the ZA setup to put on my E50. Treats says that it won't work on a E50 but I'm going to try it anyway. No one seems to have the official E50 box. My ZA50 setup came with a CDI/coil combo that is smaller than your picture and it is completely encased in plastic.
I dont think they have updated the picture on the za50 box yet in the land of treat, but pretty sure its a different box.
Mine for the e50 is the same as the one pictured ('Master Igniter'), pickup on the right, fully advanced.
As far as I know the only difference is the location of the pickup on the stator (which tells the ignition when to fire). If yours was a za50 setup I don't think it would run. Assuming your points were in good working order you probably won't notice much of a difference in performance. You new ignition may be capable of higher rpm's than the points though. You will however notice that the cdi is maintenance free.
a part # on the box may help.
rufus is lazy and hasn't updated the photo, they are different boxes. you can email him and complain, send him an email and tell him he's eaten to many chips and getting lazy.
I'm not taking the tank off my Sabre (yet again) just to take a pic of the box for you ... but I have one of each and they are, indeed, different boxes. If your box looks just like the pic then you have an E-50 box. The ZA50 box is smaller and has some rad words on it that I can't fucking remember ...
