Estoril Modification

Hey All you pipe hackers...

I've been running a puch Estoril with the restriction hacked out for some time now, with good results. I know that a few of you guys have had good success hacking/modifying these by cutting header lengths, stinger lengths, whatever else you guys do to make these things all nutty.

Someone give me a run down on how they may have hacked one up, how it changed the performance, etc. I'm getting bored with it as is, and just thinking about expirimenting a little bit, with some guidence. Thanks!

Re: Estoril Modification

If you want more high end you can shorten the dwell center section of the pipe or shorten the header

Re: Estoril Modification

Tried, for estoril modified, hacked, cut up, tuned, etc.

keyword advice? constructive answer?

Re: Estoril Modification

Is there any difference in modifying either of those two sections? What kind of lengths are we talking, a couple inches, or more precise than that?

Re: Estoril Modification

Search function won't yield you much. Best thing to do is red jennings/bell PDF articles on expansion chambers and the section in 2 stroke tuning. Then do a bunch of math to figure out how modifying the pipe in various ways changes how it performs.

However, generally speaking, shortening the header length makes it more of a top end pipe, and reducing the stinger length does the same.

Re: Estoril Modification

I made a estoril copy and ended up cutting 4 inches out of the header. The header I used was just a 1/16 of an inch less in diameter than the actual estoril. Cutting out some of the dwell should have a very similar effect but I have not done this yet. If you have a Boss pipe laying around you could add a dwell section to see how it hits lower. These are the easiest ways of altering a pipe w/o restrictions

Re: Estoril Modification

I did this mod, honestly I have no idea how much better the performance is since the bike hasn't been running in months (till now)

I did the mod while the bike was broken.

Seems to be very strong on the top end (can accelerate up hills! woot), no benefit on low end that i can tell, perhaps a bit worse (maybe).

Re: Estoril Modification

I cut about 2 inches off the header, screams on top, but made the bottom and mids real boggy, and I have been playing with idle jets and needle setting to try to get more out of the bottom, but still no luck.

Re: Estoril Modification

so would you say about 1 1/2 inches off the header would be ideal?? i need some more top end out of mine, and my stinger is already cut down and welded straight back. and it is also de-restricted...

Re: Estoril Modification

I agree with the theories Steve has shared. My experiments are with shortening the technigas. I would imagine the same variables would come into play of which of the stage pipes to cut and how much of each stage to cut for the desired effect you are looking for. I used 7 inches of header from the flange of a biturbo for an a55 and welded it onto a technigas cutting the second stage to a length of 5 inches. The results were outstanding. It's the only pipe I've made that makes an a55 50cc motor hit the rev limiter at 47 mph on the flats with an ST.
