getting my first kit to idle

its an airsal 70, I've only put maybe 10 miles max, shes going between idling fine and not idling at all, a bit weird. i want to say its when its hot that it doesnt want to idle but that hasn't been a consistent symptom. i'm pretty sure the bing 15 in there is tuned real good, did a lot of fine tuning with the idle screw, and have checked the whole setup for airleaks a bunch of times. It also bogs a bit at low RPMs, even with this dmp estoril style pipe. Would it be the 88 jet making it do this? i know thats really big (and safe). i've tried running both bh7s and bh8s plugs, doesnt seem to make a difference.

does timing come into play for idle? ive got the treats CDI in there at fully retarded, and my next skill to learn is precise timing.

I want that quarter kick start!

and by the way this is corny for an internet forum but i need to thank everyone on here for tons of advice and help, six months ago i had no idea what a carburetor does, knew vaguely how a piston worked, that was about it.

awesome. im in this for life now

Re: getting my first kit to idle

Sounds like your jet is a little big.

Re: getting my first kit to idle

Air leaks can be in the head or base, or exhaust as well. I know mine was running like total crap with just an aluminum gasket....had to put some RTV grey on there too. (also did this on the exahust, so not sure which was leaking)

But it went from having a super high idle and making tons of awful noise when slowing down and such, to being perfectly quiet and smooth and such.

Tune your carb

Seal your shit,

be done with it.

Re: getting my first kit to idle

B7HS and full advance on stator. My CDI from treats was too retarded even at 2/3 advanced. I went to full advance and now the idle/low end feels about like when i had my points timing set at 1.65mm BTDC.

nice, tim, thanks for the advice, I was thinking I ought to start working with the cdi. i think the airleaks are over with, i've checked everywhere many times. i'm thinking cdi being fully retarded + huge jet + higher oil to gas ratio than usual 50:1. I am probably babying it too much, heh.

Re: getting my first kit to idle

The other thing is to think about how many miles you've put on your new cylinder. The bikes never idle quite right until the rings set. If you've ridden more than 100 miles I'm sure they are probably set.

yeah philip, I mean I have no experience but I was hoping that could be the case. Basically riding up and down my street for a few days = like..5 miles tops. so yea. sure is great though, im sure you all remember your first engine rebuilds, feels good man!
