It's alive

Well my Orange bike is not so much a bike any more, more of a frame.

Reason being is I'm hopefully going racing this coming weekend. A new frame was modified for rigidity and personal preference.

Started out with a murry frame and then broke out the angle grinder. Chopped off the rear rack and boxed it back in with thin plate steel then chopped the seat post down. Added an cross brace (no gas tank this time), and reinforced the swingarm and back of the motor bracket with thicker steel plate. Braised some radiator mounts onto where I thought they should go... Chopped of said brackets and put them into the right place. Then I went to work on the murry tank (same as a freespirit). I dremeled the metal around the stock gas cap off and patched that hole back up. Took a hole drill bit and cut a hole into the front of the tank. then I relocated the fuel pickup and moved the mounting bracket for the tank to the frame. I more of less turned the tank from it's origional set-up into a top tank.

Stole the 85cc parma from my Orange bike along with the wheels. and bolted it all up into what you see before you. She's not pretty but ask me if I give a shit. She was made for one reason and one reason alone, get out onto the track and see how fast it will go and how far she can lean. I plan on crashing so I don't want something under me that I worry about scratching up.

Got the radiator tubing figured out bolted up the pipe (after braizing in a new bracket). Filled her up and fired on the first push. Let her warm up and then went for a spin. Feels great lots more power on initial throttle input. I changed the gearing a bit. In addition to the port work I did to the kit (minimal) and I also reset the squish to be much tighter (thankfully no knocking on my test ride).

Still need to get my fiberglass seat pan finished might need to go to plan be on that one.

Looks really funny with the gas tank pushed back so far off the front and without a seat

Better IMO with the seat, that's the old broken mold I used to make another seat pan (same as magnum but shorter). I might just reinforce it and mount it up vs using a new one. Going to crash and it will take a lot less time to do.

Re: It's alive

Rock N' Roll.

Re: It's alive

awesome. did you changing the gearing at all to adapt to racing?

Re: It's alive

looks madmax as fuck dude very nice!!!

Re: It's alive

That is pretty epic imo. If I had a welder and a few years of experience I would have fun like that too. Very nice.

awesome!

Re: It's alive

i dont think it looks at all ugly.

ergos look racey and awesome too

Very nicely done. If you plan on crashing then flashy paint and pretty stuff mean nothing right?

Does the front tire hit the radiator hose? Or do you just have to turn right all the time? : )

Lastly, are you planning to move the fuel tank farther forward or rock it mid-frame?

Again... bad ass man.

Re: It's alive

The return hose on the rad actually sings way right of the front wheel (just looks like there is clearance issues in the photos. The output hose is another story it was close on the orange bike but it's very close on this one. I have it pulled back with a few zip ties but think I can get a bit more clearance by trimming the "fat" from the hoses.

I only used a welder to tack a few things into place. Everything I added is brazed together. I picked up a cheep ($45) OXY/MAP set-up at the hardware store and figured out how to do it my self to do it wail working on the gas tank. I was going through the mini Oxy tanks like hot cakes and at $10 a pop it adds up fast. I actually had an r20 bottle (20 cu/ft) of oxy and another for accedline that had all the hoses but was missing a torch (I would have used this set-up but the cheapest I could find a torch was $150). I picked up an pipe to hose connector at kragen and just removed the hose from the old oxy pick-up and attached it to the new bottle. Now it cost me $25 to top the tank and it's been going strong for the past 3 weeks (I used 4 bottles of the other stuff in the period of a week). Not only dose it last longer and cost less to refill you can put out more oxy and thus use more map gas and thus get a hotter bigger flame. I really doubt that the other bottles could even dream of brazing the thick cross brace to the frame.

Reason the tank is where it is, I started with it mounted to the stock tab just under the top tripple plate. That put the seat way too far forward, with it set-up that way I was sitting where the tank is now. Felt really weird so the tank got pushed back. Best part is the front of the seat pan butts up to the rear of the tank as it and if/when I swap over for a fiberglass or carbon magnum tank it will fit perfectly all the way up to the triples.

Gearing right now is set at 40-17. The pipe hits so late that I am worries about being left in the dust on the starting line and really having trubble coming out of the corners. Want to go through the bike piece by piece and get a seat that is actually attached before I see how fast she still is on the top end.

Looks like it's going to be a busy week...

Re: It's alive

Raddd. I think it'll look really cool with a fiberglass magnum tank.

I saw on your blog a while ago that you made a disc brake for a 5 star, but you were having clearance issues with the rigid frame. Are you thinking about using the disc on this?

Re: It's alive

why is it that you make the bikes i drool after??!?! i thought the orange one wasent going to be beat but THIS TAKES IT! fuck yea man Pin It To Win It! that thing should be a best once you get er' all tuned for your likes

Re: It's alive

can't wait to see it on the track!

Re: It's alive

Well it's official not only is she alive but she's powerful as hell!

Huge thanks to Leo Vince for both sponsoring the 77 race team and also allowing us access to there state of the art dyno and there awesome tuner Manny. We took 5 bikes over to the east bay for a fun afternoon of dyno running, jetting and beer drinking.

We ran three other bikes before mine and by that point the O2 probe that goes into the pipe was saturated with oil and giving false reading. Initial air/fuel looked lean as shit but then upon upjetting I lost all power and the air / fuel was still off the meter.

Back down to a 110 main and did a few more pulls. This is what she was able to do.

At the wheel hp

Current gearing is 17/40. I'll be bringing a host of gears to the track to find out what works best. Also not shown is the max rpm the motor hit which is 14k, huge thanks to MotoMaticMopeds for building that sweet monster of a pipe.

Re: It's alive

dear fucking god...15hp AT THE WHEEL(im guessing you dont get much parasitic driveline lost with a moped though..)

Re: It's alive

There are a whole lot of spinning bits in the gear box.

Re: It's alive

is that the same gearing you had on the orange bike? or new..

Re: It's alive

At the Sf rally the rigid was running 18/32 (or 36 I forget). Either way a good bit higher that it is now.

Re: It's alive

Wow, nice bike. Those brazes look awesome. Great dyno score too. Well done :)

Just 1 point of advice: Run a stabiliser on the front forks. It doesn't seem all that important, but try it and feel the difference in steering response.

Re: It's alive

Someday ill have enough money to take advantage of my own oxy acet torch to make a kickass frame. (People dont know that braising is super easy :P)

so awesome!

Re: It's alive

Overlap the base metal in your brazed joints for strength
