clip fail

put a k star on my tomos, ran a 15/15,65 jet ,homoet pipe.41.gps.4stoking.went in today and case matched and a few other things.got 46.4 on gps still cut out on top, plug chop brown,no big deal,i was happy!then it locked up,tore down the motor the tip of one of the clips had broken off disrtoyed the piston and damaged the cylinder.what was left of the clip was still in its proper place.so back to stock.(still get low 40mph)anyone else have a clip fail?

Re: clip fail

they will fail if they are installed pointing the wrong way...

Eh? They have to point a certain way?

Re: clip fail

Turn them so they compress perpendicular to the stroke of the piston. IE. the opening of the clip pointed towards the case or the head. Also, just double check that it's in all the way around.

Re: clip fail

Usually its recommended to only use the clip once. If you took it off and reinstalled it the clip could have been fatigued.

You learn something new everyday. :)

Re: clip fail

thanks, have not heard any of that before.but the next kit will be installed with that in mind!

Re: clip fail

I have re-used circlips and never had one fail but I take care not to stress them when removing or installing them and install them correctly.

INCORRECT

When you remove a circlip you intend to re-use you want to grab the tab with needle nose pliers and hold the other end with somthing pointy then twist the clip so it coils in on itself a llittle and pull it out slowly.

Re: clip fail

i had a clip come out of my minarelli and it siezed nice and good. the clip got stuck in between the piston and the cylinder walls actually.
