Spark enlightenment

What would cause me to have to down jet from an 88 to an 81 after installing the CDI? Shouldn't be the other way around? This is on my garelli ssxl with a 19 phbg.

Re: Spark enlightenment

you're getting a more consistant spark through out the RPM range with CDI and it gives you a truer plug chop. With points the spring can weaken and the cam lever can wear away causing your timing to float around too much.

i like it,

Re: Spark enlightenment

Well I am not buying it. At least not hook line and sinker. One of my ifs, ands, and buts is whether the fourstroking was at a RPM that a points ignition could handle. I love a hot spark for the fact you can dump more fuel in for cooling and a cleaner burn at any mixture.

Re: Spark enlightenment

That make sense in terms of hotter spark however just below WOT i'm getting a small amount of 4 stroking with anything from a 90 to 81. With the 81 my top end is back, full on, from 88 - 85 i'm hitting a wall up top. With the points setup running an 88 i was fine all the way through the throttle. The plug chop this morning gave me a light tan, but i just feel a little hesitant about going down so far with the jetting.

Re: Spark enlightenment

depends on your timing more then anything else. Even a small amount different then you where before then your fuel requirements change. I get a major change in jetting with even 3 degree and need to re-jet. If was to just randomly guess you are little more retarded timing wise for a given rpm then you where before. If the CDI has a curve or retards the timing or you set the timing different from before then your fuel requirements changed. It's not just fuel that will cool your motor is also depends on ambient temp, timing, fuel, Compression Ratio, etc. They all play together to keep your motor running at a good temperature and to make it last. Anyways good luck in your endeavor...

Re: Spark enlightenment

Naz has got to be right. I run my plugs almost black on air cooled cyls with no 4 strokin

Re: Spark enlightenment

Timing is right on, i'll keep everything in mind while working on it a little tomorrow.

thanks for the break down
