uhhh i didnt look it up. found my info. does the mallet tap really work that easily? it sure seems to.

Re: replacing a stator without a flywheel tool?

No there is more to it than getting the nut off, and to do that all you need is a piston stop or strap wrench. Then you need to pull the flywheel off. You can sometimes do it with a 2/3 jaw puller depending on your flywheel and puller (whether the jaws will fit). Or you can use the rubber mallet method, whacking the flywheel while trying to pull it off.

Mallet doesn't always work and is bad for your crank.

Re: replacing a stator without a flywheel tool?

bonk where the nut is dead straight really hardlike.

If you feel that using a mallet to get it off and risk the crank isn't worth buying a 10 dollar tool then hammer away.

Re: replacing a stator without a flywheel tool?

Buy the $10 tool (great excuse to buy another tool!) - as said above, whacking it stresses case/bearings and u-risk screwing up the crank. The one being sold (see wiki for shops and parts) seems to be made in Europe (Germany?) and is high quality.

The best method is a pneumatic wrench (impact gun). If you don't have one or access to air tools, buy a Impact Tool, hammer driven punch like tool for breaking nuts. They work great with a twist / shock motion with the whack of a hammer, no need to hold the part.

Not suggesting any vendor, just the first thing that popped up. Looks like mine too.

Pullers, there are a million of them out there and they are highly recommended. Don't go trying to pry it off or use the wrong tool. The pull & hammer method works most times but only give one or two whacks and don't keep pounding on the crank. If it will work, it will come right off first or second whack. Make sure you have the nut on it so you don't booger the threads. Use a brass hammer or dead blow (shot filled), not steel.

Re: replacing a stator without a flywheel tool?

i used a hammer. do it on my ciao all the time too. its pretty hard to bend a crank with a rubber mallet. just grab it and hit it while pulling up, hit both sides. its easy.
