PA-50 reed block and jetting, (new settup)

I never really thought far enough ahead when I was shopping at treasts and I just threw this 4mm reed in the basket.

I've Installed tha 70cc DR kit and now Im at the stumbling block of " why did I buy this larger reed if the reed block is the same. Or for that matter why did I buy a 21mm carb and intake. Do I want to try and open up this stock block or is there another option. Im very good with tools and theres no shortage of them at the auto restoration shop I hang out at.

Next question: I'm sure you've all seen this candy. It came out of the box with a #90 Is this a good place to start cause it seems awfully big. I'm running a proma circuit of course. Any advise on the jet would be appreciated. I'm trying to save all the wook of switching jets 5 times. over

That reed block will be fine. Install the new reed material on the old block...(I actually dremeled away some material on my reed block to open it up a bit for better/more flow)

As for the carb setup, I run the same thing.

I've got a 95 main in mine. 90 is really close to what you'll need. I've heard others have settled on a 93 main for their kits.

Remember to use the flat topper piece to the carb! The regular carb topper and elbow will not work!

Good luck.

Re: PA-50 reed block and jetting, (new settup)

Not sure if the reed is any larger, but what you bought was a performance reed material, supposed to be more sensitive than stock. The reed block & manifold will work with a 21mm, but maybe better for a 19mm if you wanted a bit more mid-range power. I run a 150MJ / 20LS in my VM20 Mikki when I use it on my 65cc Metra with a Proma Lowboy.

I've also ran my 24mm Mikki through the same reed block in your pic with stock tin petal and it ran fine, especially on the top end.

I have no experience with Delos, don't know how they compare - jetting wise - to a Mikki.

That said, start with the 90 and you may need to go up a notch or two. Check your plug chops.

Enjoy the mid 40's & beyond

Re: PA-50 reed block and jetting, (new settup)

I am running a 96 in the PHBG set up for PA50 with the 70 malossi kit. In truth I wish I just ran the carb out the of the side, but it is nice tucked in there

Re: PA-50 reed block and jetting, (new settup)

i am running a 93 on my malossi kit with the 21mil dellorto and the motomatic n8p, it's pretty right on. the new reeds should bolt right up. honeslty though, no matter how much you speculate beforehand, you will have to break the bike apart a couple of times before you get it tuned in. its just a fact of life.

there is a trick though.... pull the engine mount bolt and put the front wheel up on a bucket or something. its still tight, but you can reach the carb without having to pull the whole frame. definitely easier.

have fun blasting and welcome to the wonderful world of hobbit performance. get ready to explain why you want to deal with it on a regular basis to people who dont get it.

Jeremy, I'm just not a big fan of the outside carb mount. The intake IMO is just too long.

Plus, it takes away from the beauty of the hobbit I think...

I'm actually working on a entirely new intake/reed setup that nobody has done. I'll be running my new fav carb the 20mm VM mikuni and keeping the carb tucked away all stocky lookin' ; )

We shall see how it turns out...

Yeah davy I tried it that way a couple times before but the front wheel kept turning and the whole bike would slide over. Now I block up the kick stand and unbolt the rear shocks. It giges you way more room and it's stable.

Dear Lord, your Hobbit is so fucking clean!! You could use it to serve food off of at a fancy dinner or something. Has it ever been ridden?

Yeah, thanks. This is the first bike ive restored, and I'm happy with the result but it sits too prim and proper for me. I need to lower the bars and move the headlite down and forward. Or hey, maybe I should just ride and enjoy it. over

Re: PA-50 reed block and jetting, (new settup)

ride and enjoy would be my vote. post a pic of the whole bike, i want to see it.

Here it is before I tore it down for the kit, I decided to up grade cause I bought the motor off E-bay and it had compression so I hung it on, but when I went to crank on it the bearings sounded like a coffee grinder. Needless to say I started all over. The seat Ive replaced with a mint one given free by "MD Dave" in Canada. Ive long ago given up on getting the step covers, (maybe "Ed Mc" has a spare set lol)
