nc50 gearing

I have a 1980 express, and want to change the gearing for a higher top end. So I need new sprockets. What size is the stock gearing, and does anybody know what other sprockets fit the express.

Thanks

Re: nc50 gearing

You need gears , custom gears my friend . No need really tho

Re: nc50 gearing

AKA non existent never gonna findem gears. I have tried.

Re: nc50 gearing

The best you can do for an NC50 is find a larger circumference tire. You may be able to gain 2 mph if you can add an inch of overall dimension to the rear wheel.

Re: nc50 gearing

Custom cut gears have been made before; but like rick said there is no need, unless you want to go over 50. Talk to Rick, you guys are both in MO and he knows what's up with the honda's.

On a side note, I copied Ricks 19mm intake adapter, paired it with a 19 PHBG knock off, a malossi kit, boysen reeds, and a knock off circuit pipe on an NU and it hits 50+ no problem.

Re: nc50 gearing

Thanks. I wondered about the gears because I am a little guy (130lbs), and I feel like it has the power to go faster, but is geared too low. I accelerate very quickly, but again, feel like I run outa rpm's. I may look into the gearing- could be fun. I haven't cracked open the cases yet, so is the hub of the gears the problem? Are the hubs splined (#of splines?)?.

Thanks again

Re: nc50 gearing

If you really want them I can get you the guys info that made them in the past. If memory serves stock is like 14:1 and the gears he made were 7:1; they were cut on a water jet.

Kit and do wheelies!!! Just a heads up to that the nc's get a bit sketchy after 40.

Re: nc50 gearing

I hear that 42-43 seems to be about the ceiling for an nc50. I guess I say that because thats the fastest I have ever got mine going on the flats. At those speeds, you srsly need like 70 yards to stop on those dinky little drums. Thats another big reason I am looking at stepping up to the two speed, bigger rear brake. I am also trying to mount up a pocket bike disc brake. We shall see.

Re: nc50 gearing

I looked at the gears in the tranny and don't think it is at all practical to try and re-gear that way. Should have guessed based on the fact that few have done it, lol.

So, if the easiest route is to fit a larger tire, is there one in particular that works well. I have heard of entire rear wheel assemblies being replaced- is that what you mean? If so, what rear wheel fits the express with little/no mods? Thanks.

Re: nc50 gearing

That's what I'm doing on the Extreme Urban, changing the rear wheel size from a 14" to a 16". I bought an extra front wheel and I'm lacing it to an Urban rear hub. The hubs (frt & rear) are identical, other than the rear has the drive spline. I checked the fender and it will work fine and looks proportional because it was designed too big anyway. The 16" rear wheel will net about 5 mph when combined with the 2.50 X 16" Pirellis I'll be running.

This idea won't work on my 1982 NC50 though due to space constraints. The Urban has about 2" stretched rear-end wheelbase.

Re: nc50 gearing

the rim swap on the nu will not net you a 5 mph gain , maybe 2 or 3 . If you try to do this on an nc you will find that you have VERY little space between the rear wheele tread and the case . Put a wider , {which will be taller tire on the same rim } You are left with little other option .

Re: nc50 gearing

Ok, I didn't realize that a wider tire would fit the stock rear wheel. It is 2.5" stock, right? How wide can I go?

Re: nc50 gearing

Edit: my tires are currently 2.25"

Re: nc50 gearing

Yes, I neglected to state that you already have to be running 50 to get that 5mph gain. The net difference between a 14 and a 16 is about 9%, depending on tire sizes. It will only net 5mph, if you already running 50mph and have the power to pull it.

Re: nc50 gearing

But that still means I would gain 2-3mph, so I may try it.

Re: nc50 gearing

If you allready are moving 50 and have power to spare then you are really going 60 . Just do it . Lace a 16 inch wheel onto a 14 hub and go a lil bit faster . 2 , 3 , 5 , whatever , you will go faster . Power pushes you faster ! Variator mods can make your gearing so that you need more power to push it further . just do it . MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmm k
