Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

My Vespa restricts to 25 mph when I get the performance upgrades will the Vespa still restrict?

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

depends on what you upgrade. im not sure if the 25 mph version had the smaller intake size than the 30. i am pretty sure the only restriction on the 25 is in the variator. if you press in the brass bushing, it doesn't limit the travel anymore so you get more top speed.

other than that, its the same bike as the 30. same components and everything.

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

you can't just put the brass bushing in, it has to be grinded down. also, it won't give you more top end speed, it will only increase your bottom end. as for whether or not it will still be restricted, do some searching, maybe check the recent performance post titled: "stock vespa porting" and you'll get some ideas of what you can do. good luck

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

crap, i meant check out the recent performance post titled "vespa mods whats really good?"

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

Grinding the bushing will give you a small top-end boost as well as some low-end, as the variator can close farther.

There were other restrictions than just the variator, but I am not sure what specifically was the difference between the 25 and 30mph versions. If you get an exhaust, carb, variator (or mod the stock one) and intake I would expect you to be as fast as a 30mph bike with the same mods. To the best of my knowledge there was only one cylinder for all 3 speeds, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

the back motor mount can be un-riveted so you can move te motor back and forth for top or low end.

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

wait wat

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

There was a 20km/h ciao that had a 6mm intake and a crank with different intake timing. As far as I know, all Grandes have the same engine. Do some basic maintenance like repacking your bearings, adjust your brakes for no drag, change your rear transmission oil, and pump up your tires. do that and put a pipe on it and you should be running around 30mph no problem. You might check and see what the carbon build up on your cylinder looks like too. A little basic maintenance goes a long way on a 30 year old machine.

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

if you can't push the bushing in, why was i able to do it on my grtande? i just used a small arbor press to push the brass bushing in. although i have heard that on some bikes, you do need to grind it down.

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

how do you repack the bearings, and which bearings are you talking about?

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

I'm talking about the wheel bearings. On the rear, the bearing is sealed so you will want to clean it really good with solvent (alcohol) then get some speed cream from your local skate shop (or another suitable light bearing oil) and lube it up. On the front, remove the axle and loose bearings, clean the bearings and race, then repack them with a suitable grease. I use white lithium grease. Don't tighten the axle too much, just enough that there is no play or wobble.

Re: Vespa grande 25 mph restrict

Iti s physically possible to push the bushing down flush with the movable face of the variator. However, doing this just trades low end for high end, as the variator closes farther but never opens all the way anymore. To do it _properly_ one pushes the bushing in til it's flush with the back of the movable plate, then grind down whatever is still sticking out so the angle matches the plate's face. Capice?
