I've recently purchased a 1980 Maxi-Luxe. Before I consider any mods I would like to know what H.P. model it is. The side sticker is missing. My only clue that it may be a 2 H.P. is that it has 16/45 gearing. The wiki parts list shows that the 16 was for 2 H.P. and the lesser tooth sprockets for 1.5 and 1. Any other way to tell - hopefully externally?

theres a bolt on the end of the exhaust and one near the pedal, take both off, slide muffler baffle off pipe, if theres 2 holes then 2hp (if its a luxe it is a 2hp anyway) and if theres 2 pipes in those holes, then yoiu have a 1.5

the carb has some numbers on the side that is closest to the body. you probably have to take it off to see them
There is a little series of numbers that look like a date. They usually read something like x/12/xxxx or x/14/xxx. Also on the intake there will be either a 12 or a 14 stamped into the casting.
I am pretty sure all the maxi luxes were 2 hp high torque, hence the "luxe".
I have two of them, same year and everything. Is it silver? They are pretty nice bikes, I just don't like the seat, but thats easy enough to change.
The bike is maroon or burgundy colored. Previous owner had it since new. Had the original chain/sprockets - 700 miles on speedo! Runs great, even pulls my fat ass up hills and 30 mph on level.
Just looked at the intake - it has a "14" in raised numbers. I take it that this means 2 H.P.?
Just saw it in the spare parts list: 14 = 2 HP. Thanks for your help.

I've got that model; its pretty. I am currently rebuilding the engine and MAKING IT FAST.
