FA50 is now slow

Hi everyone!

I have a Suzuki '84 FA50 which used to go around 50 mph last year. I took out the gas last november and haven't used it since last week. Now I can't go faster that 25 mph and I'm wondering if there's something I can do to have it go back to 50 mph. I'm not a mechanic and don't know much about scooters so please be gentle with me!

Thanks in advance, Vic

Re: FA50 is now slow

How the hell did you get it up to 50mph in the first place? You must of drained out some sort of magical fuel because 25mph is the stock top speed. If you ever get it back up to 50mph again I'd like to know how.

Re: FA50 is now slow

clean carb and let it warm up for a while. i doubt you where doing 50 before on a stock fa 50 maybe kph. and maybe your gas is old did the gas sit all winter to?

Re: FA50 is now slow

I think 50 kph equals 30 mph.

Re: FA50 is now slow

LOL! Sorry guys, I made a mistake it's 50 kph! LOL

How do I clean the carb? Is this something that I can do by myself?

Re: FA50 is now slow

Great! Now it doesn't even start anymore!! I started it half an hour ago and noticed a sound (like something loose inside) coming from where the air is going in (or out) which I didn't have last year so I left it in idol and decided to give it some gas then it suddenly stopped. I've tried to restart it a few times and one of the last times I heard a loud bang and some smoke came out of I don't know where. I really hope that I didn't break anything. Do you think this is something that I can fix by myself or do I have to bring it to Suzuki (I hope not since it might be expensive).

Re: FA50 is now slow

thats just a back fire. it is because your oil injector gives to much oil fouling an old plug. nothing you can do about it but remove it and premix or change your spark plug.

when change your spark plug and it should run great. (local auto parts store less than 5 bucks for a spark plug). my guess any way. a spark plug is incredibly easy to change (unless if its cross threaded aheemmmm me) unsrew spark plug with thing that you can get it to unscrew with. i use a 13/16 inches but that's the wrong size it is like 20-22 mm metric., treats spark plug tool works.

if it isn't that

your carb is pretty easy to take apart do not take it to Suzuki. if you are rich and want to blow money take it to a local moped shop. they know mopeds and they will probably be cheaper. if you don't have one near you. it is a 14m nut for the choke pull the 2 fuel lines ,remeber their order, a twisty cap throttle slide, just use your hand, 2 10 mm bolts both aren't easy to get at but the whole thing shouldn't take ore than 30 min for taking it off. then 4 philips head screw on the bottom of the bowl and tahda. then blow through all the holes with air.

sadly i can do that about as fast as it took to type this.

Re: FA50 is now slow

Thank you so much Zeke for your response! I'm happy to know that this is something that I can probably fix by myself (trying to save some money here) but unfortunately I have no clue what you are talking about when you talk about the carb. It sounds easy for you but for me this is chinese. LOL! But, I love a great challenge and I will try this option first. Who knows, maybe one day I will be the one answering these questions for other people.

Could you maybe give me possible reasons for the noise coming from the air filter?

Re: FA50 is now slow

just change the spark plug. the spark plug is the thing attacked to the biggest wire under your foot rest. pull on it the white thing that was attached to it is your spark plug. unscrewwy it. go to auto parts store say hay i need one like this ,don't get auto lite plugs, re screwwy. ride. simple? sorry i suck at explaining things. it is easier than it sounds.

as for the noise it hates you. ok seriously what type of noise? i did you take off the top cover thing on the air filter? umm parts diagram to help explain this:S.

Re: FA50 is now slow

-Zeke

how much negative difference can an auto lite plug really make?

Re: FA50 is now slow

Again, thanks Zeke! Don't know what i'd do without you!!! I'm going to do this this morning. I have two questions about the carb cleaning: would you or anyone reading this have any suggestion on a good carb cleaner? And, Is there something I could do like put something in the oil to keep the carb clean? Wish me luck with the carburetor since i've never done this before.

Re: FA50 is now slow

Oh my! I don't have the right tools to be able to take out the spark plug and I tried to take out the carburetor but stopped since I have no clue what i'm doing and I don't want it to get worse. I know it's really easy for you guys but when you don't know anything about engines and you don't have the necessary tools! I found a cheap mechanic but I don't even have a trailer to bring my scooter to him. Thank you everyone for your help, I will see what I can do in the next few days.
