Smoking exhaust....?

I just welded up a bullet exhaust to my v1 and I was getting it jetted right. I rode it less than ten minutes and when I stopped I notice my engine was emitting a smoke. I turned my ped off and noticed the smoke wasn't coming from the engine but more from the exhaust header region. What's going on?

Del 14.12 w/o the airbox and 68 jet

Bullet pipe

New gaskets

leak?

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

Can I still drive it if it's a leak?

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

in the exghaust sure you will lose hp but it is still drivable and smoke? are you running rich?

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

fix the leak!

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

Im running rich, I had a 62 in before and it had a plain brown, the 68 has a pretty deep brown. It isn't overly rich but I notice a small speed difference difference with the 68, a bit slower.

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

four-stroking?

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

Not at full throttle.

is this a completely stock bike except exhaust?

if so your running too rich with an airleak. fix the air leak cause your running too lean, which is why the bigger jet is kind of compensating and giving you the dark brown color. once the leak is fixed it will be too rich.

stock v1 runs a 52. 68 jet is too big for stock with a pipe. put a gasket, fix the air leak, down jet, and you should be alright.

had the same problem. and if it still smokes thats normal. once youve riden a while, see if it still is smoking. it shouldnt, if it is, make sure your oil/fuel ratio is correct. 50:1 no less for stock. no need for more. (the manual actually says 60:1, so you have more oil anyways.)

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

Pretty much all stock, 11 tooth gear and a bigger intake (15mm). The 30 mph upgrade kit from 1977.

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

Oh, i'm running a 40:1 ratio currently, could that be the cause? would i have to drain the tank and re-mix it?

I took another look at the welds, which look solid, but the header had a be ground a bit which ill try to clean up.

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

2 stroke smoke?

make sure the exhaust belt is timed right.

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

gas on the header is burning.

Re: Smoking exhaust....?

i figured it out with some tests. my case has a slight leak from the pedals and the oil drips onto the pipe and "smokes" as it gets burned off the pipe. fix the leak, fix the smoke.

thanks all
