it seems everyone goes for the malossi multivar. . .

the 8 roller is very similar to the stock variator accept that it allows for better tuning because the sides are equal. The stock ones have 5 rollers. People often just take out weights and make it uneven and say whatever...
The malossi variator has a much larger ramp allowing the belt to travel out farther.
Anyone use the TJT variator?
Never used the TJT, I love my multivar, though.
im thinking about getting the tjt because keep blowing up my single speed clutches so im gonna order one soon i think
why does everybody opt for the multivar and not the polini? quality issues? expensive?
The TJT doesn't look as well made as the Malossi (I've seen it in person), but I've never run anything but my Multivar. I hear the Polini and Malossi are pretty similar but every one thinks the Malossi is a little better, can't say why.
i have the 8 weight roller piaggio variator zippy sells. it's nice because you can tune it easier than the stock variator, but it's not much bigger (ramp wise) if at all, and it's pricey. when i bought it i thought i was buying the malossi variator actually, it was a long time ago and i wasn't as "aware" let's just say. i realized that it wasn't the one i wanted when it showed up at my house...but i'm using it these days. i'd definitely say get the mulitvar or the polini, you don't have to pay that much more for an actual performance part.
also, i've never heard anyone talk about the polini variator, in fact i'd never heard of anyone running it. although, i just read on terrydean's blog yesterday that while he was at the polini cup last weekend his multivar "exploded" so he switched to his polini...and it worked really well. i'm looking to get an upgrade at some point though, i'd be interested in the TJT as well as the malossi and polini variators though.
i usually always go malossi over polini, but in the variator department, i think polini won out. i have(had) one of each, but never used the polini because i really liked my malossi, and i assumed it was better.
ciaociao tore the malossi one apart after not much riding at all, though.. i was replaceing the broken malossi parts as they broke with parts from the polini, now i'm pretty much rocking the full polini and i like it sooo much better..
I have Variators on all 3 of my Vespa Mopeds. I have 2 Malossi and a polini. performance wise, I don't think one is better than the other or at least I doublt if I could tell the difference. durability wise, I couldn't say. Black ciao is pretty fast and it has been running the Polini with no issues. The only reason that I have the polini on the Black ciao is that, for whatever reason, I don't seem to get as much belt slip using it and the Malossi belt at start up.
also, i should say not many vespa mopeds are as jack-hammer hard on their drive train parts as my ciaociao, so i'm sure your experiences will differ from mine.
oh, and the polini variator solved my belt slip issue as well.
my friend jason has also had belt slip issues with the malossi variator. maybe that's something that sets the polini apart from the malossi
Speaking of Jackhammering your Ciaociao, Good work representing us Vespa guys in the Polini Cup! It looked like way too much fun.
Having an unbalanced direct crank variator would be scary as fuck.
Leetle tiny weights get ALOT heavier at 10,000 rpm's of centrifical force.
thanks for the input everyone
does the polini require a new clutch spring + specialized belt?
I had belt slip on my Multivar until I installed the yellow rear spring.
malossi comes with the spring. does the polini?
polini does not come with spring, but they have two available. malossi comes with yellow spring, and has others available.
i had tons of belt slip issues with malossi variator + malossi belt + yellow spring.
switched to polini variator + malossi belt + yellow spring and all is well.
i also bought the red spring and am thinking of building a clutch using it so that i can run heavier weights and tune this shit better.. but right now i'm in the if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it boat.
yeah I'm super frustrated with belt slip. Last season I went a few weeks of just spraying belt dressing on the belt just to get it to start each time...other than going polini, any other belt slip suggestions (while we're on the variator discussion)
there's a kid in another topic getting ready to place an order with fred for some 100mm rear pulley faces, that should fix the problem for you.
