65 Metrakit PHBG setups

Matt Scout The Scouting Dcon /

Hey all,

I'm getting my 17mm PHBG dialed in on my 65 Metrakit. 17 mm custom intake, derestricted Estoril. Its hitting about 45 mph at WOT right now with 16/40 gearing. I went through MarkRyans guide and have it roughly tuned in, slightly rich with a 50 idle and 78 main, W7 needle at richest setting. Again, this is a rough setup and it runs alright but I want to get the most out of this kit and have a solid bike with good take off. And before anyone says "check the spreadsheet", someone obliterated most of the Puch setups and none of the Metrakit setups remain. So what are you guys using?

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

My bro has his case matched to a ZA50 with a 19mm PHGB, garelli intake, 84 main jet, and an estoril pipe. Stock 2 speed gearing. Tears off the line, but only hits mid 40's. If it were mine, I would gear it steeper and have it hit 50. Seriously, if you leaned back while hitting the throttle from a dead stop it might wheelie.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

my set-up...

16 - 40 gearing

19mm Race PHBG

21mm intake

45 idle jet

84 main

w7 needle, second notch up towards rich

I know i need to down jet alot but still breaking in

without the filter it rips to 45 quick

running with the filter i get some WOT surging almost 4-stroking

still breaking in the kit though, only have 30 miles total

running 32:1 still

Good to know. my biggest concern is the idle jet might be too big, though it seems pretty responsive at 1/8 throttle and the mix screw set. The 78 jet is a bit rich, but I'm okay with that as my kit isn't 100% broken in yet either.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

hey matt... i'm not sure if you knew that chad talked me into the 19mm phbg spigot style... or read my post.. but I still might need some advice/help from you in getting the right intake.. the one chad sold me will probably have to be mounted forward. the screw holes don't quite line up right, so do you think i should drill the screw holes in the intake wider to fit or shave the intake lip down so it fits better (it hit's the fins when it's facing forward...)

I've had headaches with widening the entire hole. it's better to just dremel the holes into an oblong shape to fit. I got close with my current intake and just needed a little bit of dremel work to make it really fit. Be sure to do it evenly on both sides so you don't move the intake off the port either. As long as you still have a good contact surface between the bolt holes and the intake hole, you should be just fine.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

word. thanks for the help! :)

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

If it idles fine and pulls then your idle jet is cool... I recently had to go down to a 38 in mine with a 70cc kit to make it awesome, but then I advanced my timing and it's no longer awesome. Took me from great to a lean bog.

Hi Chris, I was reading about your problems regarding timing and the idle jet. I advanced my timing slightly from stock so on the ride home tonight I will see what that does, perhaps the 50 idle jet will be fine with advance timing, we'll see.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

time first, jet after :)

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

if you're hitting honest-to-god GPS 45 mph on a metrakit with a 17mm carb and 16/40 gearing you're doing everything right . . . that means you're hitting like 9000rpm. people exaggerate on this site . . . you might be able to pull 10k rpm with a bigger carb and two months of slimfast, and that'll get you to 50mph, but you'll probably also have to lighten rotating mass (CDI) and regear . . . honestly fuck it, you have a fast bike, just enjoy it.

just to help with setups, i have a 19mm phbg (90 main, 45 idol, W6 needle) on a metrakit and 16/41 gearing that hits like 42 with a proma circuit and 45 with a boss. i ride mostly in manhattan (sea level).

I GPS'ed it at WOT, changed down to a 75 main. 39.9. WTF. I'd rant about how I can't ever seem to break 40 on a moped I've built, but I'm just too fed up right now. And while trying to tune it it got harder and harder to start now it won't start at all. I suspect it is the points have slipped and I was just so frustrated with the whole bike I stopped working on it. That and there were a bunch of orders to process.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

On my set-up it hates my air filter... I removed the filter and it fly's !! 16 - 40 gearing

Whats this about idle/running jets? I thought moped have just the one jet in a carb

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

depends on the carb... Dellorto's have 3 jets

Idle main & choke

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

^PHBGs have three, Dellorto SHAs have one, so do bings.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

hey you're not going to go much faster than 45 with an estoril unless you have high gearing... It's not a top end pipe any way you cut it. It's good for wheelies and all around daily driving though.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

I need to GPS my set-up, My bike computer says 46. Guys from work say i was doing 50 cause they were behind me so IDK my real speed.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

ma retired is the old new old new.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

my unmodified estoril does 60

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

I like this carb on a metra 65, tried and true and can be a little finnky at times but my gf rides it pretty close to 7 days a week and hasn't really had any issues and it moves really well with the carb and if you think it's a hair off just give a little twist of the jets.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

yeah. It rips on the mid range... Mine is topping out at 43-45 on flat, faster down hills with 16/45 gearing... I like it that way though... I hear if you pull out that restriction that you get more top and don't loose any mid or low... I want to try it...

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

This is 43 GPS...

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

the same bike that has the strange carb has 1" removed from the header and restrictor removed and the silencer straightened. It really helps smooth out the top end. I'm not sure it gave a huge improvement in speed but it really improves the feel at the upper rpms and didn't kill anything in the lowend.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

Good to know... I really love the low end and mid range pull of the estoril. It's fucking crazy...

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

I have ran about 3 gallons of 32:1 - regular 2 stroke oil

pre-mix through my MK65 kit.

When do you suggest to switch to Synthetic & what mixture

40:1 or 50:1 ??

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

Not with a Metra 65.

Re: 65 Metrakit PHBG setups

if you wont your kit to last fo a long time go to 32:1 synthetic i am runing 25:1 hitting 50 with 18/45 gerars i might be lossing like 2 or 3 mills on the top
