leaky dellorto. Bing time?

After running my brand new Dellorto 19PHBG for 2 months, the stupid thing decided to crap out on me. I've cleaned the carb about 5 times with compressed air. The float needle looks fine (pointed with no dents), and so does the hole it goes in (no scratches/gunk). The float floats, and I've tried adjusting it to no end. I'm running a fuel filter, so I don't have any rust in my gas. I just don't get it. Dellortos have a bullet proof reputation, but this thing leaks like a sieve.

The only thing I notice is that it will not leak if I turn off the petcock, take the float bowl off, empty the gas out, put it back on, then turn on the petcock again.

Sure turning off the petcock works, but if I forget, my tank empties on my garage floor.

I'm at a loss. I'm almost ready to put my bing back on and give up, but there has to be something I'm overlooking.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

is the bowl gasket crimped and messed up or missing ?

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

Can you pinpoint exactly where it's leaking from? My SHA leaked at the banjo AND from the float bowl, and it took me forever to figure out that it was leaking from more than one place.

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

I had the same problem. It turned out to be a small leak in the fuel line right were it connects to the carb.

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

try this... with the bowl off, turn the gas on then manually lift the float to the closed position. does the flow of gas out of the bottom of the carb stop? it shouldnt take much lifting pressure.

this is concrete evidence that the float needle is doing its job.

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

ok, I'll try those today and check back.

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

Know what's even better than letting gas leak out all over your bike and your hand? Take off the carb, drain it, wipe it down and hold it upside down so the float is in the closed position. With no pressure on it, blow into the banjo and if you hear air coming out, the needle is bad. Try lifting the float to the open position (normally down) and blowing, then letting it fall closed again. That's how I do it. If air can't get through, neither can gas. Plus, you're not draining gas all over yourself.

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

my sha always leaks from the float bowl

Re: leaky dellorto. Bing time?

OK, I figured out what was wrong. It was leaking from the float bowl, so I knew the gas line was fine, and the gas flow wasn't shutting off to the bowl. I turned on the gas and pushed the float up, and the gas stopped running out. I turned off the gas and tested to make sure the float was floating again. It did.

I finally realized what was wrong. There is a little metal tab which stops the float from traveling too far down and getting stuck in the bowl. The tab had bent out somehow letting the float down further than stock. The float wasn't getting stuck, but that tab was hitting on the inside of the float bowl making it so that the float couldn't go up all the way to shut off the fuel flow.

If your PHBG leaks, bend this tab first. It would have saved a lot of time if I knew it would stop the float from traveling all the way up.

Thanks for all of the awesome replies.
