Chassis foam

Anyone ever tried using chassis foam to stiffen the frame? Seems like the frame would flex enough to affect performance at high speeds, even if the rider wasn't aware of how much the frame was flexing.

never tried the foam but a lot of people put frame braces on their step throughs for exactly that reason.

Got a pic of an example?

Google is your friend.

Re: Chassis foam

How stiff is foam?

Do you really think that add stiffness to a steel frame?

Don

Re: Chassis foam

Yes, as foam is denser than air and harder to compact and bend.

Tho on a moped, I doubt you'd feel the difference.

After the foam sets, it's nearly as strong as steel but not as heavy.

I don't think it would be worth it on anything less than a very highly tuned bike (like 50-55 mph+) and only after everything else has been upgraded or modified. But it certainly wouldn't hurt anything. The amount of weight it would add would be minimal.

I wonder if it would cut down on vibration at very high speeds.

Re: Chassis foam

It works well enough that the auto manufacturers use it.

Re: Chassis foam

Hey, there's a hole with a shiny chrome twist off cap on the top of my frame, what a perfect place for said foam!

Re: Chassis foam

actually, you probably could fill the tank original in frame tank with foam and mount a top tank.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Take a Sprint and foam the tank all the way back to the seat and stick a Targa tank on it.

Re: Chassis foam

just put in the frame brace and call it a day. the foam wouldn't do much unless you had a top tube to fill it with in the first place, and then it would be over kill.

Re: Chassis foam

that is also true. i think i would rather weld on a brase.

Re: Chassis foam

In the tuning and racing world, I am the guy who started the chassis foam thing, In testing 2.5 lb per cubic foot catalized urethane ridged foam could increse the stiffness of a sheet steel frame rail by over 40%

Bathroom foam doesnt do it, it won't cure inside a frame it has to be ridged two part catalized foam, in my testing I used stuff made by foamseal or 3M. It was my numerous articles on the subject in Sport Compact Car Magazine many years ago that started it all off.

I USE FOAM IN MY TIRES.

Re: Chassis foam

what foam are we talking about? that "great stuff" you get at the hardware store, or marine foam?
