soft seize polini questions

hey, i've got a pinto running the 64cc polini, 14mm bing jetted at 90, with a techno boss with a mixture of 32:1. i had about 60 miles on it and started opening it up more and letting it back down gently. did that about 3 times, stopped and was then going at a slightly higher cruising speed (around 35) when i soft seized. anyone got any input? did i just run it too hard, too soon? thanks.

happened to my last polini. turned out my cylinder was warped. :/

Been running the same set-up for a long time. You gotta raise that needle in the carb. It might seem like it's running fine, but it needs more gas. I run the needle on the third setting from the bottom. You need it running rich at idle so that it's getting lubrication when you back off the throttle from high rpms.

Mine also uses an 86 main jet. Case matched and very mild porting.

Re: soft seize polini questions

thanks guys. whats goin' on joseph? i just got that bike legal, once it's fixed lets ride!

Re: soft seize polini questions

did you case match? if not the top of your piston will get too bad and soft seize up there

Re: soft seize polini questions

bad= hot

Re: soft seize polini questions

nice! yeah i need to get mine registered. well, if it was actually running well i'd be more motivated to! built up a new bike so might just be riding that around instead..

your pinto's at sam's, no? i think i recall seeing it there with the polini off. i think i might just be fed up with polini. but at least your bike looks pretty! hah

Re: soft seize polini questions

see the 1977 blog from a couple weeks ago. Polini themselves run their kits with 60:1

Re: soft seize polini questions

yeah it is case matched. looks like it seized near the bottom. joseph-yeah sweet alice is at sams, gonna work on her tomorrow hopefully. just put together a newport that's pretty nice, no comparison to my number 1 but i'm pretty stoked to get it fully operational.

Re: soft seize polini questions

polini is warped = no.

check your intake yo....

Re: soft seize polini questions

man, wish i read that blog on 77 a few weeks ago. i heard that the day i seized actually, everyone with polinis around here is runnin leaner mix. hey cuper fella' what am i checking for with the intake? i'm pretty new to kits and fucking goddamn filthy mopeds in general......

They aren't totally flat, so when you torque the intake down it puts a tiny bit of pressure on that raised portion so it slightly warps the bore causing the piston to rub excessively or not go through at all. You should file it flat before bolting up the intake.

I don't think you should lean out the oil mixture. Polini doesn't do it themselves either. Its a theory that I personally question.

Re: soft seize polini questions

awesome. oil mix and the jfk assassination, i love questionable theories..... thanks for the intake info, thats news to me. anyone have experience running leaner mix on a polini?

I don't think anyone has tried it yet. Elliot said he was going to, but I haven't heard from him since.

I run 40 to 45:1 always, only 1 soft seize, but that was electrical related.

Re: soft seize polini questions

what in the electrical can cause a soft seize. i have soft seized twice now. and i know i need to replace my points. could that have done it?

i had a small short, so crummy spark, so jetting was off, so I overheated, so i soft-seized. You should always know why your jetting is off, not just that it is off. Fuck points.
