Air leak with new kit?

Peter Baudendistel /

I’m having some trouble with my moped and it seems you’re the one to ask. I cannot get rid of this air leak I’ve been having for the life of me. I’ve redone the gasket on the block 3 times, and each time it reappears. Maybe you can offer some input/advice that’ll help the situation.

I’m working on a 2001 Tomos TTLX with an A35. I bought a 70cc alukit from treats.

My procedure has been as follows:

1-Remove nuts

2-Remove head

3-Remove cylinder

4-Remove wrist pin retaining clips

5-Remove wrist pin

6-Remove piston

7-Scrape off old base gasket as well as possible

8-Place new base gasket in place (3 times-Once dry, Once coated in 2 stroke oil, once with silicone gasket goo)

9-Put on new piston, wrist pin, clips

10-0il new cylinder and place on.

11-Put on head

12-Put on nuts, then tighten in x pattern

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'm at a lost. I don't know what it could be, other than a warped head.

Re: Air leak with new kit?

yes, it is not flat, hold it up to the light with a ruler or hold it on a peice of glass and see if it is straight,.

Re: Air leak with new kit?

torque wrench? and is one side smashed or are the gaskets not smashed at all?

No torque wrench. I bought one that was too large, and was too lazy to go get a resizer. I've decide I should go fix that before I go back to work on it.

THe gasket looks to be getting pressure equally.

Head doesn't look warped to the eye.

Re: Air leak with new kit?

Is it your head or your base gasket that is leaking?

Re: Air leak with new kit?

culprit could be at the intake somewhere too, don't forget to check there

Re: Air leak with new kit?

the nuts only need to be like ten or eleven foot pounds of torque right? that's not much. make sure you don't over tighten them.

Could you point me to where you found that they only need to be 10-11 ft.lbs?

Re: Air leak with new kit?

most peds its like 10 lbs but i put all my kits on to 11.

and i make my gaskets from this rubber like stuff that i got from i think auto zone this stuff works grat i tried it the first time after tiring for like 6 months to get a kit to seal but that rubber gaskets on and it sealed

Re: Air leak with new kit?

Like magic bryan said..check you intake and crap..you have to take of your intake to put the cylinder on..maybe you reed gaskets..who knows..check'em all.

Re: Air leak with new kit?

shit... i put about 18 lbs and use lots of loctite on my mobys....never had a head or base leak ever....Don't attempt with a puch, since they have wimpy engine bolts and will snap..

What ever force you go with, just make sure it's EVEN. That is more important.

Re: Air leak with new kit?

If you can start it up without it getting out of control and reving to top throttle then: start it and use carb cleaner and spray where; the intake meets the engine, where the intake meets the carb, and the base of the kit. If it starts to stall; thats where a leak is.

a35's tend to have air leaks where the intake/reed block meet the engine. Its hard to get rid of too. I had the same problem. I used brand new gaskets along with permatex motoseal 1 gasket maker. I also ran a bead of it along the outside of the intake too just to make sure. Its the only thing i could find to do the trick.
