What should be done to a brand new 65 metra before putting it on?
What is this "clean-up" process i keep hearing about?
What about porting?

I just out mine on straight out of the box and haven't had any problems. The clean up is just chamfering any sharp edges that the piston ring might get caught on.
I've never seen any failures from a lack of cleanup with the Metra's but now everyone is talking about it like it's the plague or something.
by clean up people just mean use some fine files and then fine grit sandpaper (220, 320, 400, then 600) to smooth out the exhaust and transfer ports real shiny. You don't do your intake though, because a rougher texture on the intake helps with the atomization process.
never had a Metra, bUt I always look for excess flashing in a new kit and piston. you know, that thin ridge left behind where the two halves of the mold meet? esspecialy on the aluminum piston. little thin flakes of aluminum getting hot and coming loose in the engine is less than desirable.
i ported out the e50 before putting mine on.. metrakit gasket, sharpie, and a dremel.. took less then 10 minutes.
just slap it on. and never look back thats what i did.
chamfer ports. dont want no rings stickin just cause you wanted to blast outta the box.
The issue is quality control...For instance the one I recently bought was very rough around the edges. Casting work was lousy. Not a difficult thing to take care of...just annoying.
your kit doesn't work on the outside. Shine the exhaust and portmatch, voil
^mike, that was the most confusing post here yet....work on the outside? shine the exhaust? portmatch? _voil?_ im tryin to learn my shit, but wat?
he is saying fuck the casting on the out side of the cylinder who cares. just make sure it looks good on the inside.
he wants you to shine the ehxaust port because exhaust gasses love a mirror finish and lke that extra flow. portmatch would be to open up the transfers on your case a little
and voil is probably suppose to vwalla or something like that some french bull shit
jay if you want i can show you all you need to do in person.
The crappy casting can extend to the ports and mounting areas (head, intake and exhaust). Just give it a good once over, slag on the fins is inconsequential...
