Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

Just depends. You have a lot to learn, but that is a good bike, and a good engine to learn on. Start with a 13mm carburetor, an exhaust from Treatland, and a high-flow air filter. Tuned correctly, that should get you to 35+. Ride that for a while, then get a 64cc kit and a Malossi variator if you need more speed.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

get that girl off it. but you should def wear the slippers. theyll ad at least 5mph

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

That 70 cc kit would be killer!!!Im going to make it as fast as I can to have a sleeper.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

My learning curve will be a lot faster then most moped newbies.I can rebuild Triumph and bsa motors.Im rebuilding a cb 350 motor now for a cafe racer.I have three other motors waiting in the wings.Im also0 doing a sr 500 brat style bike.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

I was riding on the back at one point with Stacy Marie.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

Clean and rebuild the rear hub as well as repack the bearings and that should get you a couple MPH right off the bat. Also, when you get a kit and want to rebuild the motor, check the wikki for how to drill out the intake and cut the crank.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

nice grande. i have never seen a silver one in such good condition. First, take off the chain and belt covers. on one of these sides, there should be a little sticker with a number on it. the number is the speed at which that particualr moped is limited to. the grandescam in 20, 25, and 30 mph versions. yours is probably a 25. vespa had the limiter in the variator assembly. if you take it apart, you will see a bit of a big copper bushing sticking out under where the belt goes. this stops the variatorfrom making the front pully bigger than what is nessecary to go the speed limit labled. if you press in thebushing with an arbor press, to the point where it is flush with the rest of the assemble, you can probably squeeze another 5-10 mph out of the ped without effecting low end. This is the first mod i didwith my vespa grande and i highly recomend doing this. If you want, i may beable to post some pics or drawings of what i am talking about.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

you gotta bore out the case to fit the sleeve, if you want the 70cc kit, the 65cc will slide right in.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

Dukes (MRDR 133) /

yeah um...not to confuse the new people but honestly the polini kits are better for vespas. the 60 something CC malossi's are about as good as DR kits. for that thing, get a new carb, and a pipe for now. that should be good

13:13 dellorto, and some kind of simonini pipe. thats all you need to roll with for now.

read up in the wiki about vespa performance and what not. and use the search function for vespa stuff. i wrote a bunch of reviews/translated some shit from the dutch sites on vespa products!

have fun and welcome to the machine!

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

I disagree. I have a DR, Polini, and a Molassi 65cc kits. The DR is a good value. Pretty fast at first but slows with age. I personally think the Molassi kit is a bit better than the polini but the polini IS a good kit. If I were buying another one today, I would buy another Molassi.

Any one have any experince with the 46mm (70 ~ 75cc) kits? I'm thinking of uprading on my Grande and am interested in anyone's prefrence between Polini and malossi on the bigger kits.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

I remember reading that the polini kits don't have the fit n finish of the malossi's and the polini's are slightly better performance. probably not enough to notice. i would just get whatever is cheaper, or do what I'm doin. no kit. keep it 50cc! you would be surprised at what you can squeeze out of that little vespa 50cc.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

Hmmm

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

ya that was what i was thinking. wow, my grande seems so much bigger than that. haha. so judging by the wheels, yours is a pre 80' grande? mine is an 81' and it has the magnesium wheels.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

Yeah I was wrong on the year I think its 79.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

ya, that explains it. it looks extreamly clean. where the heck did you find one this good looking?

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

It was my wives grandfather moped. He took care of everything he had to the extreme. He only road it in his towns parade.I also have owners manual original bill of sale which was just under 700 in 1980 and the import papers.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

very nice. i beet it rides nice too

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

man i'd like to ride that

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

Cute girl, nice ped...you seem to have a lot going for you. Keep it up and make that thing awesome.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

After you work on the variator, the other trick with a grande is to move the motor back and forth to your preference. The rear motor bolt is usually on a riveted plate- remove the bolt, drill out the rivets, and use the little plate as a washer. Move the motor forward for a little more top speed, back for a little better take off.

12.12 or 13.13 carb and proper jetting helps too, depends on what you already have.

Clean oil in the rear hub always helps.

Re: My new to me Piaggio Vespa

Why would moving the engine forward or backward affect anything since it has a variated set up? I guess I could see moving it forward would not allow the belt to travel all the way out on the rear pulley...but then it shouldn't be able to travel all the way up on the front pulley either...which wouldn't mean better top speed.

Can you explain a bit so I understand why?
