Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

kyle the velvet quaker /

Ok, here begins my new quest. This next week, ONE week before LA, i decide to tune a 19mm PHBG on my Kstar bike. This thread is to be a help for me, by getting opinions, and to help future noobs like me during searches.

So i'm making a manifold tomorrow with wayne, and then friday purchasing jets to get my process started. I'm alright at dialing carbs in, but this one is just gonna take longer. From my reasearch the main jets i'll need range from 78-88, so I'll get em all. Most of hte piston port 70cc's I see on the spread sheet are using the 7 needle. I'll be using the 2 articles on the wiki as mega reference too. here and here break>

I'm not sure about my idle jet, I have a 45. I'll ask around.

But first off, when you were tuning your PHBG, any dumb mistakes to share, to help us not make the same mistake?

I'll keep this updated once I start the process on friday.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

Hey,

you will need to take out the metal thing that goes with the stock jet.

Start with needle all the way down and work up.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

Erm no, needle _CLIP_ needs to be all the way at the bottom notch, meaning the needle will be as high as it can go.

Yeah, I know to start rich and work down. I'm familiar with all such in carb tuning. I'm more concerned with setting the idle jet and such correcly first or second time around. I'm looking for more Kstar input I guess, as there isn't much. Ive been also looking at TCCD stuff on the spreadsheet being a similar setup to the Kstar. Seems like people don't really change it, or its a 45. Which is what I have. I figure tuning around its richness would be good for going down hills, and when you let off the throttle all the way. hmmm.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

omg.

45 idle turn the fuel mixture screww out like 1 and a half turns, main will be like 88 or something. If it bogs then down jet if it leans out then up jet.

easy.

my guess is your idle jet should be b/w 45-50, and I don't have experience with that cylinder, but 78-88 seems realistic. I'd say just take off the little disk under the main jet, and make sure to start rich for both the needle setting and the jets. Also, eliminate airleaks at the intake/carb junction. After that, follow the wiki guides and trial/error/blast.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

put a 45 idle in. 88 main and leave the needle where it is.

fuck yeah, justin comes thru.

Thisll be cake. 80-to 90 jetz for main. people make this carb seem so complicated, but in reality it isn't

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

don't jinx yourself dude... knock on some wood right now....

but yeah like these cupertino kids said. 45 idle should be good. 1.5 turns out should be good to start, but dial in in after the engine is up to full temperature. start with the needle on the 2nd richest setting. I can't possibly imagine needing it to be on the richest setting. and yeay start at an 88 main.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

I'm gonna start tuning my 21 phbg this week too. Those wiki pages help a lot.

I'm still not sure what main jet to start with though for a 65 metra. It came with a 92, but that seems too big to start.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

Kyle, are you actually a Quaker?

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

personally, i feel that tuning a phgb is sooo much easier than a bing.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

You may find as other K-Star runners have that you will wind up with the needle in the leanest position. You willl have that tuned in 2 hours. What kind of pipe are you running?

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

yea what pipe ur running will make a big difference.

with my dmp #35 idle jet is magic!

#45 jet was great mid/top but boggy at the bottom way rich.

92main great for me but im running 74cc

w7 needle set in the middle yay

lol, No i'm not a quaker, Would be an interesting bar piece tho.

Hmm, this 19mm I have here is actually a 9 needle. No difference.

Right now I have a Techno Estoril, I think I'm gonna make it a center exit tho before LA.

Thanks for all the input again. Should I purchase a 7 needle as well, maybe for later when I realllly dial it in? Or is the small difference nominal?

I think my jet range will be 80-89? This is gonna be fun, custom intakes n stuffz.

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

The W-9 is only .001 inch wider than the W-7. Might be better for California weather. That Estoril could be the perfect match for that cylinder depending on your personal taste in performance style

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

i had a w9

mine runs better with w7

but im 21mm

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

also

#45 worked good for me with the tecno hunter

but with the dmp/estoril being more restrictive #35 is on the money

make sure your electrical is perfect before you spend hours jetting. Ask me how I know this.

^^^^ listen.

Oogh, that makes me wanna puke its so true.

Hmmm Ive got good spark and bright lights. I may retouch some of it, but I don't think I can get it much better than it is. Anything in specific?

Don't loose your throttle twist knarps when you are installing your new carburetor.

fucking tip #1. I hate my dogs. I think they ate it really. It looks radddd tho

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

I think by electrical folks meant condensor / point set right. A slightly aging condensor, not bad yet but going will cuase you to run retarded. And god knows thats no fun.

You can spend 3 months jetting around it, but if your condensor isnt stopping arcing, you can drive yourself nutty.

i mean finding that perfect spot, advance, point and plug gap that give you maximum awesome power. I only found it once on my puch, but it was amazing, like double the power. I really should have measured my timing then, but alas, its not much fun if its easy.

Make sure there are no little shorts and that spark is strong!

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

I timed the flywheel with a degree wheel so i can set it with a timing light really quick, points are new and such. its all gravy! Hmmm, I do think instead of running it hardwired via a wiring block, before I leave to LA, i'm going to solder all wires and shrinktube em, just for extra awesome contact. Its all together. I just need to get the throttle set up and to mess with my jets now it seems!

But i'm totally pumped. I GPSed at like 41 with the 14mm bing. can't wait to see what this fucker does

Re: Tuning a PHBG in a week, for noobs

chart might help.
