dunno how common they are but my 1hp was (i kitted) an open port. i did a lot of porting and got her ta haul pretty well.. from 20 mph ta 32mph (flat ground) with the same 13x45 gearing. also new pipe and carb too.. bullet proof they are.. 78 maxi.
hella common they are also known as the puch low torque cylinder. they are usually faster top speed than the high torque or closed port cylinder but have less hill climbing power.
they can be made very fast
i practice porting on those. and taking off aluminum with dremels and stuff.
