FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my turn

So I got to thinking and came up with this:

I finally figured out how to trick the CNC machine.

These and the judicious use of 1/4-20 all thread, I should have a dressed up version of the Schlung method. Able to set the max extension, and compression. Plus Preload! That is a n old sachs fork spring, seems to be in the right range load wise.

more to come!

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

sorry, I get so stoked over these seemingly small victories...

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

I'd like to see this in action!

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

looks awesome. i cant wait to see how it works. the fork spring is genius, i might have to steal that idea.

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

Did you use Nylon? I've used it and it works fairly well but I bet you will find Acetel/Delrin will machine better and works better for that application. But maybe that already is Acetel, anyways just figured I would mention that. Also if you are feeling like experimenting I would suggest something else to build, just think pneumatic and dampened, I'm sending Benji something like that soon for testing.

Naz,

It ain't nothing fancy, it's .750 inch white acrylic (plexiglass)

When I finalize my design im gonna make it all out of 6061 alum. I might get fancy and order some rod ends from Mcmaster carr

Yeah I looked into somethings after you mentioned pneumatics and hydraulics. What catalogs are you shopping in, i saw some stuff in mcmaster, but it was a little too pricey for me right now, maybe later

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

we're working on a pneumatic system right now in milwaukee as well, i work in a hydraulics labratory so i've got tons of the stuff laying around.

the idea of using a gas spring had occured to me as well, i'm thinking along the lines of a simple pneumatic cylinder with an accumulator.

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

you can think easier then that... and I'm running a setup already on my bike and building some more for further testing. I'm sure you could probably come up with something even better though if you have all that equipment sitting around. I'm been riding around for couple weeks now with no issues and really like the damping effect. It smooths out the acceleration dramatically, no more surging etc and seems to be easier to tune the weights.

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

are you using a gas spring or just a damper with a regular spring? we've talked about doing both ideas, including doing a remote reservoir system with fluid and an accumulator, but this is the first really nasty AV10 anyone in milwaukee has built, so we have no idea how much force there will be or what frequencies we want to damp out, or how much resistance we want. The idea is that a hydropneumatic system can be easily used like a launch lever, with a controllable needle valve in the system one could adjust instead of having to change weights. We have the engine bracket made, and are working on the frame bracket, but we're waiting on a clutch pulley before we can design the actual strut.

Graham and Naz

Email me, this is tech i want to keep up with...

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

Already did....

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

Thank you Naz! I replied!

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

This is what I have so far, its just kinda jammed in there, it fits sorta. at first I was worried the spring was too short...

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

How many of you would be in agreement that the spring should probably be biased towards the pulley's side of the whole contraption

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

haha.

I would be in agreement that it should be biased toward the pulley side.

I love reading this.

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

hot damn! that is a very solid looking setup.

does anyone have pics of one of these linear springs, custom or not, in action?

Re: FrenchTech:Linear engine return spring, my tur

Spring thingy that was home made.
