I can't decide which kit to put on the brown and gold magnum. Polini or metra kit?
This is a "What would you do"

Also I can tune a bike so I am not worried to much about the polini
These kits are in two totally different leagues. Metra is durable and cheap-ish, but won't touch a Polini without some serious port work. A well-tuned Polini with a big pipe would be closer to a Metra 80 in power comparison. So, in other words, if you got the quarter of a grand for a Polini, then by all means, drop it like it's hot.
Polini--All I can say is DAMN....The difference of reed-cage vs. non is INDESCRIBABLE.
I also for got to mention polini vs. 80 metra
80 metra, if u fancy urself a good tuner, piston ports are harder to tune tha reed, but polinis blow up when u fuck up tuning
I have only tuned one kit it is an
70cc kstar
19mm pbhg
tecno boss pipe
dmp crank and yada yada
got about 500 miles on this daily 45+ bike. plus one florida rally!!
I am just ready for something much bigger. I also have access to some korrodo cases for an 80metra build.
polini is number 1. Just expensive.
I am not worried about price. and I have the skill to install and tune either.
no replacement for displacement
I almost wanna take back my vote for polini.....seeming as though I cannot get passed the bum head gasket/seating issue. :(
Is it on your Magnum? Are you using the magnum head? If you are ditch that thing and your head leaks will go away.
The big fins on the Metra 80 (parma too) look better on a magnum, more balanced. since they are based on the Magnum cylinder. Look at the Tuning sheet you can see the pattern.
rough averages:
65cc Metrakit 45-55ish
65cc Polini 50-65
big 80's 55-70mph
looks alone almost make me want the metra.
the metra is more of a cruising kit, big heavy piston (not that heavy, really, but much heavier than polini) that restricts the max RPM, makes it spin up slower, the fins are bigger for better heat dissapation, its piston port so to get big power you'll loose your low end, and it has a nasty habit of wrecking everything else in your drivetrain. If you want to blast 60 all day on long rides on a heavy bike the metra will be much more reliable.
the polini is a sprinter kit. yeah, a lot of people do use them for cruising, but its really designed to be spun fast and for short amounts of time. it heats up faster and is really touchy about temp changes, it is reed valve so it has a broader powerband and more useable power down low. built correctly it will out accelerate a MK80 all day long, especially on a heavy bike, but its finnickey and you really have to turn the screws to it, making it less reliable in the 55-60 mph range.
neither of the "80's " are really 80's though, right? aren't they more like 74-75?
How come people dont' combine the awesometronic of both worlds?
reed caged metrakit ? It doesn't seem that hard at all to fit one. hell, go induction through the case ?
I was thinking about induction also. matt
also I only really need to cruse like 50.
I can't find the thread where you make the metra 80 reed valve.
that's pretty much how to win
i think you will be rewarded easier with the polini that shreds outta the box even if its not perfectly tuned and will need to struggle to get the metra to perform like a champ. If you can tune it for max potential the polini can dust many ppls metras. I tuned up and ported out a polini for the latebird rally last year and dusted all the metra 80's there except shaws, just goes to show most ppl can't tune a big piston port.
They are both great kits but as graham said they have different purposes.
i guess each kit has its purpose, but the purpose of polini is to be maximum awesome all the time. Like elliot said, they can dust metra 80s, gila's, etc with a little porting and some good tuning.
I am pretty bad at tuning (mr. airleak), but my polini's have been bomb-proof getting ripped on and they never seize or anything. At the creature rally my polini was up there, and I know I passed a lot of metras. The best part: 1 of my studs was basically gone, so I had a HUGE head leak. I thought it was going to explode over the GG bridge, but it survived and has since.
That said, the metra does have tons of potential and can probably go faster with a destroyer or something, but really, whats much over 50 really worth?
bragging rights
fuck a polini.
I think I am now leaning to a polini
if you do get a polini. it is wise to spring to a 4 petal right away. more power and carb choices...
go gila
if treats gets the gilia in I am going that route. otherwise it is polini with 4 petal and 19mm pbhg
^^ good setup.
