removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: success

i dont know if any 50vs actually have the four-weight variators. i did this on my '62 av88. just wanted to point out that this mod made a tremendous difference, and worked exactly as intended: bike stays in lower "gear" way longer, hits the powerband at a slower speed and remains there longer. combined with the conservative port job i did, this bike now flies like an eagle.

Jay... is that a 78 player in the background? You have the nicest spread of any moped shot I've seen for sure.

Re: removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: suc

yep, old stand-up victrola player. only 47 years older than the av88, and still works like a charm.

Re: removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: suc

my room mate has one of those, it's a wind-up. totally sick. nice moby too, haha.

Re: removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: suc

Jay,

Nice. The best free mod ever for a motobecane.

I found a 50V with a 4 ball variator in it by the way. Other 2 had 3.

Re: removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: suc

i've heard tell of people who have done this with basically no resulting improvement, so i thought i would post my results, which are amazing. if youve got the right tools and know what youre doing, this is about a 20-minute procedure.

Re: removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: suc

The key is to have a strong running engine, and ideally a ported on.

^ on = one

Motobee Goode /

really nice bike!

Re: removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: suc

have done this mod with no success, so maybe you were referring to me. glad it worked for you though.

is the variator on that oldschool moby the same as what were used to with the 70s era 50vs? slap a varplus on there?

ive taken apart one real old variator that mustve come off something like yours and it was a bit different in design then the newer ones.

on a side note i took apart an old av something case (the case the older variator was on) and the transfers were already matched to the transfers on the cylinder. i thought that was kind of a nice touch.

Re: removing 2 out of 4 moby variator weights: suc

steve -

this variator appeared pretty much identical to the one on my 50v, save, of course, for the plastic piece that holds the weights. i seem to recall a couple other people besides you had also reported a lack of any noticeable change.

my engine case was also already perfectly matched to the cylinder. i was pretty excited to see the nice, pointy transfers on the bottom end. made porting/tuning way easier.
