How many base gaskets to use for 65 metrakit

Peter Nguyen /

The kit came with the paper base gasket and about 3 metal base gaskets stuck together. Should I ditch some of the metal gaskets--seems like a lot?

Thanks

i used all three. Otherwise it hit the head.

The manufacturing tolerances for that kit are not great. Also, some people run it with the stock head, some people with a high compression head. You definitely need to use enough gaskets to make sure the piston isn't actually knocking against the head when it's torqued down (rotate the crankshaft carefully by hand to feel if it is).

As for the optimal number, since it's just a fucking moped, most people just use the least they can without hitting the head, but it's not that hard to get precise about it. There's a two-stroke tuning guide by Alexander Graham Bell with a great chapter on cylinder heads which explains a few very good things you can do, like measuring your squish band's clearance with modeling clay and measuring your compression ratio by filling the combustion chamber with oil (and measuring how much oil that is). Then you can optimize those two figures by adjusting the number of gaskets you use, decking your head, etc.

Don't just run enough so that the piston doesn't hit the head. That might not be enough. Check the rings at BDC to make sure you can't see them through the exhaust port. If you can. You're more likely to break a ring or sieze.
