Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

It works!

If you take the right 2 magnets out it will run normally

however it will not power the lights.

The flywheel is noticably lighter and the bike feels much more responsive. The lag it takes to get the variator to lock up and the varplus to reach powerband is noticeably shorter and it accelerates quicker than I thought it would.

Make sure you do this to a spare flywheel though.

Also the flywheel has to be in good shape to handle the abuse of removing the magnets. The second one I tried had weak epoxy holding the magnet retaining ring and the whole ring seperated from the flywheel.

Be ready for a bit of a fight to get the magnets out I used

a cold chisle a heavy and a light hammer and a flathead screwdriver.

You have to remove the magnets that ARE NOT INLINE with the little welts that align into the cam!

These ones:

Make sure you get all of the bits of magnet out they could easily foul the points.

I wouldnt recommend this on a daily driven moby because of the lighting issue but on a built moby with a pipe this mod will help to shorten the time to get into the powerband.

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

ooooh tricky tricky! looks like something i need to try.

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

I'd be careful with this. I believe it works, but and important part of ignition is the break of magnetic flux from the magnet passing over the ignition coil. The manual for my sears has a whole page on it. Popping out two of those magnets means you have half the flux break charge

I'm just saying.

Good idea though, that should take care of a lot of weight on the crank.

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

Does that mean I cant get back to the future?

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

if you can get up to 88mph right when the lightning strikes, you're golden.

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

not unless you have those magnets in... bummer. i guess the loss of low end is worth the ability to travel through time.

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

you mean gain at low end.

Have you smashed some magnets yet steve?

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

no, the loss of low end. if you remove the magnets, you gain low end but lose the ability to travel through time. if you keep the magnets, you lose low end but gain the ability to travel through time. thats the impression im under at least.

yea im gonna try this when i get home this weekend if i can dig up a spare magneto. i really need lights though, gotta keep my daily rider legal.

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

Steve, if you need a flux capacitor i may have one but it needs some cleaning up.

Re: Two magnet light motobecane flywheel

This is a pre flux capacitor model, in its place is the zeiner diode which performs the same function.
