not much difference?

I just ordered my new pipe (proma gp) and i have no speed increase whatsoever. maybe like a half a mile an hour. it sounds pretty cool. I'm pretty sure upjetting will help because it sounds like its starving for a little more something. I'm kinda scared to ride it because I don't want it to seize or anything like that.

shouldn't i have at least some speed increase with a new pipe? even if i haven't upjetted yet?

1980 puch murray.

Re: not much difference?

not necessarily.

tune it first, then if its not performing start asking questions.

Re: not much difference?

dude, mine was such a huge improvement, i couldn't even believe it. bottom and top end. are you running rich or something? or using a restrictive exhaust gasket? maybe you need to adjust your timing and everything too. that also helped me a lot.

Re: not much difference?

i mean its all stock except for the pipe. i know i need to upjet, but besides that, what else should I do?

Re: not much difference?

High flow filter or modify your airbox, I would say.

Re: not much difference?

I don't know about this particular pipe but you do have to get the RPMs up before it will start functioning

Re: not much difference?

That's a great pipe, your problem lies elsewhere...

Re: not much difference?

this isnt a mystery. the proma is a pretty basic bolt-on pipe as long as you tune it. once you get the jetting proper, im sure itll perform as you expect.

Re: not much difference?

how would you go about modifying an airbox? i know a guy that can help me with the carb, so jetting isn't a problem. when you say _tuning_ do you just mean upjetting or something else or more?

Re: not much difference?

Yep, in this case tuning means getting your jetting right. You can make your airbox flow better by drilling some holes in it and replacing the filter element with (I believe) 2 layers of pantyhose. I just bought a high-flow filter... much less work, and looks sick.

This will increase the amount of air your engine can draw (obviously) so it will affect your jetting.

not much difference?

...weird. this thread is like a god send. i was iffy about getting a different air filter for my 1980 murray until now. THANKS!

Re: not much difference?

proma GP is an awesome sicko blaster pipe on stock bikes. instant 35 mph with 14/14 bing, proper jetting, timing, and stock filter.

if you're adding a pipe because your bike is fucked up in some other way (timing/dirty carb/bad wheel bearings/no compression) it wont help you. usually when pipes dont help its because something else is fucked up.

Re: not much difference?

This man speaks the truth. I spent a good long time stock, getting everything working right before I added the pipe and filter.

It really pays to know that everything that you have is working right before you throw a monkey wrench in it by changing your engine configuration. That way you know that if it's acting screwy it's probably because your tuning is off, not some other issue that your new parts exacerbated.

Re: not much difference?

so to sum things up:

I should check everything like carb and etc to make sure everything works fine, then modify my air filter, then upjet and I should be running better?

Re: not much difference?

that setup should run a 68 jet with no air filter and a 14 carb, 66 with air filter/14 and a 64 with 12mm carb.

check your timing, points, etc, and your compression first.

Re: not much difference?

Righto! :D

Best of luck

Re: not much difference?

thanks much

Re: not much difference?

yeah i did the airfilter super haxorz hack with the pantyhose. not sure if I messed something up but yeah she started smoking from the bottom of the engine area. I don't know if this is a coincedence seeing that i haven't upjetted or checked anything inside the engine/carb yet. hoping its not like ruined. I'm not even too positive what size carb i have. so i don't know about the jet.
