What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily ride

I was just thinking that possibly in the future, I will be in a different state (NC) and may live near enough to work where I could ride. So I was thinking, what is the most reliable ped to increase speed and daily ride, if you figure that initial cost isn't a big deal. I assume it's going to be the Tomos Streetmate R...How fast are people getting these peds with simple bolt-ons like air filters/exhaust/sprockets? Are they reasonably reliable? Anything else like it in terms of aftermarket, etc.?

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

you don't really effect reliability much on almost any ped by throwing on a pipe and an air filter. doing so does require you to rejet your carb, though, and if you mess that up you can seize your shit. with an expansion exhaust you'll be able to hit higher rpms, which will wear everything a little bit faster, but that's all really . . . you're not going to put a tecno bullet on a tomos and throw a rod

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

Yamaha QT50.

Not a ped, tho.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

puch magnum for sure. big and comfortable and easy to mod.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

Just a puch in general.. E50 especially, it's so damn simple it's almost scary. I put my GF on one since she generally rides 5 to 7 days a week. Which is more then I do :-)

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

tomos sprint

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

i guess i mean that will go fast too... reliable and fast, hence why i started of thinking of the streetmate.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

any puch e50 man. I have never rebuilt any kind of motor. But the e50 was very I mean very simple.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

If you want a cheap and reliable bike it won't be fast.

If you want a cheap and fast bike it won't be reliable.

If you want a fast and reliable bike it won't be cheap.

That said, the best way to go is to buy a stock bike and add a performance exhaust, bigger carb and performance air-filter. Keep the stock cylinder. That way it will be pretty reliable and pretty fast.

And generally, a stock bike with less miles will be more reliable. An old Puch Maxi can be just as reliable as a new Tomos. I have a stock Puch Maxi with a Proma GP, it does around 40 and it has never let me down. Sure some things wear down over time, but it never stopped running or had a major breakdown. And I've had that bike for a long time.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

don't listen to him. all moped parts are cheap even the expensive ones. My bike is my daily rider. I have about 1000 bucks into it. Cheaper than any car. plus it gets like 75mpg.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

For straight speed you're better of with a Tomos Sprint or Targa LX then a streetmate due to weight, though the disc brakes and hydrolic forks are nice obviously. But any good Tomos, Puch E50, or Minarelli can be very reliable while still being fast.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

Yeah right, don't listen to me. i know jack shit about 2-stroke engines...

And in my world $350 for a cylinder kit, $135 for a carb + intake and $160 for an exhaust is fucking expensive. I don't know what you do for a living, but most people can't just afford to spend $650 on performance parts... I don't call that cheap. Yeah, sure if you compare it to car parts their cheap... But you're forgetting that most car parts last atleast 10 times longer than any given moped part.

Jesse, with all do respect... Roald knows more about mopeds than you, your brother and me combined.

I'd listen to him over just about anyone on this forum.

And yeah, a Puch is the answer.

Easy to work on, easy to find parts for.

Word.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

once i finally got my puch/e50 out of junkyard status, and up to par. it ran close to 3500 miles with no major mishaps. then i dropped a kit, high and low, the problems are endless now.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

$350 for a kit? $160 for an exhaust? Most kits are around $200, right now the tomos alukit is $105 on treats, and you can get an exhaust for $80 though obviously there are higher end ones. Point is that you could basically throw $185 on a tomos a35 plus upjet and airfilter, so maybe $210, and get a lot more power. I've spent lots more on builds but you don't have to.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

puch maxi

Downhill Harvey (OFMC) /

The Hobbit is most reliable for me.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

He was saying that the top dollar parts were cheap. Those are top dollar parts (80cc kit, Homoet exhaust, 21mm PHBG etc.).

And yes, you can fully tune a bike for around $200.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

Thanks Justin, that means a lot to me. Especially coming from you. You're the Hobbit wizzard as far as I'm concerned ;)

And I don't know if I know more than you, him and his brother combined, but that's not my point. Even if I did know jack shit about peds, his argument is still BS.

I'm not letting him dismiss me with an argument that's purely personal. He might think that top of the line performance parts are available and within reach for all of us, but for me $350 for a kit is just too much. I can't miss that kind of money.

And with the top of the line parts his ped won't last very long, unless he has the skills to build the engine properly or have it build for him.

And all that still doesn't change the fact that a wicked fast high revving ped shreds through clutches, bearings and pistons way faster than any tuned ped with a stock jug ever will. Great for daily driving... Especially city miles...

Ever tried daily commuting city miles with a fast 80cc kit, JT? You should. Let me know how it works out for ya...

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

Tomos sprint or st. Throw on a pipe and go. Plenty of power for around town and super reliable.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

My ciao is reliable as hell, starts every time. The stock 50cc (plus pipe and carb) made it through all three days of gender bender and never protested once. its still going, Fears no hill in San Francisco, and is faster off the line than kitted Puchs. Of course, said Puchs, catch me and blast by, but the little guy is a real trooper.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

Qt 50 is the most reliable. Shaft driven ,yamaha motor and it eats hills. Parts are always available. With a little work they will do 40 to 50 and there still reliable, becaue of the stock 60 cc head, cylinder kit.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

John Joedicke /

Tomos ,just for the simple fact you are going to be in NC where they are distributed out of and the parts, both OEM and performance are redially available for a "modern" moped. Not a 30 year old + retread!

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

My Minarelli V1 with 75CC polini kit has never failed me, and I have been riding it back and forth to school for about 3-4 months.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

John Joedicke /

Just saying, my well kitted Tomos LX has served me for 10 years now and all I have changed is a set of clutches. Now that is reliable, but the bike constantly evolves and maintainance is the key.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

derbi variant. the reed valve bikes will do 50 with a 15.15 sha and a pipe. they are super reliable as well. just kind of tough to find.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

nerdzilla NoPeds :( /

i love my sachs, but my tomos is SO much more reliable and easy to get after mkt for. i even live 10 min from handybikes.... i suggest to get 2 bikes. theyr relatively cheap, and easy to find (at least where im @ there always a few for sale 400 and under). and if you need to you can always use the other one. or sell it if you need the dough. put a lil work on one and you can sell it for a good profit.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

minarelli ftw

tank. pure tank

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

a new tomos with a cheap kit, cheap pipe, and upjetted carb is probably your best bet.

Re: What's the most reliable ped to mod and daily

That's fine I wasn't trying to be a dick. I am just saying Compared to cars. Mopeds are cheap transportation to mod. That is all I am saying.

Peace

Jesse
