Winter Project

So I got bored and started a new motor for my Maxi.

Found a old KX80 top end... a Wiseco Yamaha piston (50.5mm) to fit the Puch wrist pin size and a chunk of 1.5" aluminum.

Threw the cases in the mill and mowed the deck off. Milled the aluminum to the correct shape and cut it in half. Lined everything up with the case halfs and welded it togther... added a lot of filler material to allow me to cut in the transfer ports with out breaking out.

Then I did a little calculating and determined the proper case height to obtain a zero piston to deck height with no base gasket and milled the case to this demension. Drilled and tapped the cyl mounting stud holes.

So far I see no reason it wont work....

Next I will rough out the ports on the mill and finish with the hand grinder.

I hope to have it in and running by spring.

Re: Winter Project

That's gonna be sick! Great work! Look at the stock transfers, they are 1/8th the size of the new ones!

Winter Project

Wow.

Re: Winter Project

fuckin A those transfers are sick! When you said "old KX80" I thought for sure the pic would be a crusty, giant-finned aircooled monster.

Re: Winter Project

fuck yes.

Re: Winter Project

Here is a pic of the pipe I plan to use... with a lot of modifications..lol

Its a custom built KX80 pipe I found cheap... almost too nice to cut up.

Re: Winter Project

this is going to be awesome.

Re: Winter Project

The KX top end is from the late 80's, water cooled.

Its going out next week to be re nicasil'd. Nice thing is Millenium (Nicasil place) is only 14 miles from my house.

I figure it should end up with 87 cc's.

Re: Winter Project

How much are they charging for the nicasil plating? I didn't know anyone in the states did that!

Re: Winter Project

I think I just wet myself! Also that motor gets me exited. Thats going to be insane.

Raymond Wright IV /

freakin sweet!

Re: Winter Project

Great work so far man!

No reason it would no work. it's too bad the cylinder bolts are outside of the water jacket looks like you had to add a ton of aluminum.

Transfers appear to be about the size of the 85 parma I used, just be careful of the case bolt on the right side, your either going to blow right through it or get very close depending on how you port it.

Can't wait to see the end results.

Re: Winter Project

Thanks.... I have to get back on the project.. just too many friends have projects for me at the moment leaving no time for my stuff.

I will post more as soon as I get back on it.

I did get the cyl re nikasil'd nice to have freinds in the biz... was a freebie

Re: Winter Project

bump

Re: Winter Project

What happened to this i keep checking back and no progress!

Re: Winter Project

an update would be nice

Re: Winter Project

dean playing god on rafter's account /

another example of someone who should have waited until the project was done before opening their internet mouth about it. so lame.

Re: Winter Project

sick

Re: Winter Project

hope it wasnt a stock crank. i doubt that could hold up to the extreme forces.

Re: Winter Project

Man... no love here... lol

Sorry I just havent had time to work on it since the cyl came back from the nikasil place.

Everyone who walks through my shop also asks when I will finish it.

But they are the same guys that have me working on their projects for the upcoming season instead of my stuff.

When things slow down I will get back on it.

Re: Winter Project

what does the kx 80 crank look like compared to the puch crank because those kx 80 top ends put out some serious power.. more than any kit would dream of. wouldnt want to be snappin a con rod in those cases/cylinder
