right now I'm running the circle mesh and the plastic 'high flow' black cap thing. I was wondering if anyone out there saw improvements with a different better filter. maximum breathing is what I'm looking for. I'm looking for that last little bit of juice I can squeeze...ok thanks...

You can take the black cap off if you want. The flow is fine you don't really need anything fancy for a sha.

I was thinking just drill a bunch of holes in the cap. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything that could take me up a bunch of jet sizes.

The SHA filter is just a bunch of stacked screens wedged in the housing that you can pry out with a tiny flat head screw driver...
Remove the filter element. Pop out all of the screens with a tiny flat head... The The back screen has giant holes in it... then they get smaller...
I bought a 7 dollar metal mesh cone filter from the local dirt bike shop. Then I cut a piece out the same diameter and round shape of the SHA air filter element housing and put it in from the back so it was up front.. Then popped the screen with the huge holes in the back to hold it in.
Place it back in your sha and seal up the edge with electrical tape pulled super tight... Or your could just use a little rtv around the edge to hold it in there. They will vibrate out if you don't do something to keep it in without using the cap.
This is quick and easy and super high flow... Like almost zero restriction.
Done for less than 10 bucks and takes about 5 minutes to make...
I'm going to wiki it soon I think...
There are K&N filters that fit the Sha but they are HUGE and mad expensive...

Actually the flow is horrible... You can barely feel the air flow from an air compressor blowing directly into it if you put your hand behind it...

chris that sounds awesome. I can't wait to investigate. I hope you'll have pictures for the wiki. I'd like to see the metal mesh cone so I know what I'm asking for at the dirt bike store. Yeah, the k&n filters are out of the question because of clearance. Your idea sounds pretty bitchin. Do you remember how many jet sizes you went up?

I started with it modded... The first thing that I did was test the flow on the stock and found that it was weak so I started fucking around with it then realized the screens come out... I believe a 74 is what I ended up running with the Malossi kit.

just get a uni. I think its either 1.25 or 1.5. They are like $15 and pretty radical.

Just go in and ask for a cheap high flow cone filter for a dirt bike... They might ask you what size, but you can just tell them it doesn't matter because you are going to cut it up... The foam ones are more expensive so they will probably direct you to the metal mesh one's anyhow... You need some burly scissors to cut it up.

oh, I just went and played with an extra one I have. It has 5 screen layers. I could probably just try and reduce the number of screens and that would improve flow, right? Bandits don't even run filters, and this isn't going on a kit so I probably don't have to stress about the littlest shit getting in there. And so you run your setup without the cap at all? You just secure the filter so it doesn't fall out? this is bringing so much excitement! thanks for the idea again.

uni's only work if you are forward facing... if you are going for space it's my way or the high way... Plus those unis are huge... Any high flow filter that you buy with the diameter to fit a sha is going to be huge... the stock element houseing looks way cleaner and way less dorky too in my opinion.

yeah dude... pop out some screens and you will get better flow. If you could find a thin piece of foam that would work really well too along with the screen with the big holes... I was going for no restriction when I did mine... also i just use electrical tape to hold it in. You have to use something though, otherwise it will eventually vibrate out...

You gotta figure that without the mesh filter or foam that you will get shit in your carb and find yourself cleaning your carb more often... If you will use it I think that I have enough left over to mail you a piece. email me your addy and I will hook you up... Did you find that you had one screen on the back with really big holes in it?

yeah it looks like a big holed one and 4 of the same size hole. I spend plenty of happy wrench time on my peds and wouldn't mind keeping up on a clean carb. Thanks for the offer but I think with just knowing I can use different screen combinations is the most helpful thing. If my experimenting doesn't yield good results I'll hit you up for sure...thanks...

on my sha i ran with just the airbox on and no airfilter for the whole year. almost no restriction/prevented any forced air.

With the short, straight intake on my Tomos, I don't have enough room for the plastic cap or any other external filter on the SHA. To hold the metal filter in place, I drilled a hole on either side of the intake bell and filter (to the carb side of the screens) and tapped them for short screws and used thread lock on them. This setup is easily servicable and flows ok.

yeah i'm down with the daves discount motors one as well. the rubber goes to shit though if your carb is puking gas all over it, at least, with 10% ethanol gas in milwaukee it does..

Wipe it out periodically. If you are spitting that much gas you need to tune it a wee bit better. At 7 bucks, buy a couple.

You can get air filter foam in bulk, pick out the thinnest you can find, cut a circle 1/2" larger than the carb's mouth all the way around, and use a hose clamp to hold it on.
If you need a rain cover, make a tube out of any plastic you have- coke bottle, spray paint cap - whatever, and hold that on with the hose clamp too.
